instant-g exhaust sound
I'm just thinking about a replacement exhaust. Anyone got any clips of their instant-g's?

instant-g exhaust
Sorry no clips, but I just finished the "Happy Crab" install on my 87 3.4. I like the sound quality --deep and rumbly at idle and explosive on full throttle. It's milder on steady cruise, but still significantly louder than stock. Previously had a Fabspeed cat-bypass and modified 2 out muffler and the "Crab" is definitely louder and deeper in tone. It's a well made unit - the fit was perfect, but I only have about 300 miles on it so I can't vouch for the longevity. Timmins uses the word "quiet" on his website, but that's only true until you start the engine. If you have any questions, feel free to pm.

Hi Angelo,
Excellent info - thanks very much. The only other thing i can think of is Valve adjustment(which you probably haven't had to do with it only just going on the car). My current ss exhaust has to be taken off which i hate doing, in fact I dont think i sealed it very well last time so i'm getting fumes in the cabin :-( The Crab looks like it offers a bit more room? cheers Alex |

Alex:
You don't say what car/engine you have. As far as I know the "Crab" is meant for 3.6 transplants or 3.2 with 993 heat exchangers with flipped flanges. The muffler itself, being at the tail of the engine doesn't interfere with valve adjustments at all. The interference, if any, would come from whatever headers/heat exchangers you are using. For me the 993 HEs give me much more room than the stock 3.2 exhaust did. And oil temp is lower due to no crosspipe and no cat underneath the left hand valve cover. Lots of pluses- the only downside is I wish it was a little quieter, especially at normal cruise rpm.

I have an 88 3.2, and yes sorry, I'm talking about the headers being a real pain when it comes to adjustment time.
I followed your rebuild thread "aircooledexcellence" which is what alerted me to the crab in the first place. I'm planning a simlar route for my car once i can find some money.... |

The thing with exhaust sound that is almost impossible to assess with a recording, is resonance. I have 993 HEs with a Triad muffler and the resonance at cruising speed is a killer. It sounds and performs great other than that, but I have to wear ear plugs for long drives. IMO, nothing works quite as well as a stock-type muffler.

Unfortunately, I sold it to a fellow Pelican before the gen 5 came out. Thanks for the offer, though (wish I still had it).
