Drain the oil tank and the engine sump, replace the plugs with new gaskets fill with about 9-10 quarts, warm it up and check the level ( engine idleing and car level) add oil to somewhere in between the add and full mark. Make sure the front oil lines ( in the right front fender are warm indicating the circuit has opened and oil reading is accurate.

Make sure the engine is up to temp or about 3-quarts is going to stay behind the thermostat valve of the front cooler/line or trombone.

+1 above. Get a Bentley also if you intend to do more than an oil change.

you might want to do a search on here about the correct oil to use. Most prefer Brad Penn because of its ZDDP properties and SWEPCO for the trans.

I love this site. thanks for all the replys! I actuall already purchased swepco 201 (put the same thing in my 944S2), and was told by a local shop that I should use Castrol 5w50 synthetic. What would you guys recommend?? It has 162k miles on it and have no idea what was used in it prior. The previous owner did not know what the dealer put in it. Last oil change was years ago too. I know. pissed me off too.

Read the oil thread, but regular dino oil W2050 spring/summer with some going to W1040 in fall/winter.

Synthetic is a different story/weighs.

I would try to find Brad Penn or another flavor of dino oil. You'll need 12 quarts so buy a case.

I run 20W50 Brad Penn and my engine has about 150,000 miles.

I wouldn't recommend synthetic as increased oil leaks have occurred in these older engines.

No sense in wasting good oil if you don't have to.

Where could I purchase Brad Penn? Is there any other brand that could be recommended? Do you run 20w50 year round?

Does anybody have an opinion about "synthetic blend" oils?

Here you go: http://www.lnengineering.com/store/catalog/index.php

Charles (ln engineering) is a pelican and has spent a lot of time getting educated on oil and older air cooled engines. I buy oil from him and it's shipped quickly. Expensive, but worth it.

Also see his oil thread, as had been pointed out to you earlier, I think.

Good luck and welcome to the group--picture?

Get a five gallon bucket and jack the back up high - when you take that tank bolt out, 9 qts are coming out in about five seconds. A regular oil catch pan won't do.

I use either Castrol 10-40 or Shell Rotella 15-40. Buy three gallon jugs. Get the Mahle filter from Pelican, plus the crush washers for the drain bolts.

That's a lot of oil, huh?

I never jack it. Besides, if you get him doing that then he'll have to ask about "what's the best way to jack?"

Gotta learn sometime....

At worst, it's always good for a spirited argument about how many of us are ruining our engines by using them as a jack point.

Then we can segueway into towing with a 911, always a Friday afternoon favorite.

Cheers,

Why would anyone jack the back up?

The engine and oil drain holes are in the back.

Jack the front up and get the oil to run out of the long lines, I get a lot out that way.

Make sure the "fill" plug on the side of the transmission can be removed before you remove the "drain" plug.

Be prepared for a frightening volume and velocity of oil coming out of the oil tank. Ordinary-sized oil drain pans are insufficient. You are warned. I jack my car up quite a distance at first, and place a 5-gallon bucket under the tank.
