Torque settings for Bilsteins
 

Hi,
Thanks to this great forum I conducted searches and found excellent instructions on replacing my 1971 911's front strut inserts and rear shocks with Bilstein Sports and have done the installation without too much difficulty. Now that I have the car on the ground I want to torque the front and rear shocks to specification.

For the front inserts I found the torque specs for the Gland nut (95 ft/lb) which I obviously have done. For the single nut on the insert located in front trunk that goes on top of slotted washer that attaches entire strut to strut mount (58 ft/lb).

For the bottom rear shock nut/bolt searches indicate 58 ft/lb torque. However, my search for the top rear shock nut inside engine compartment on top of rubber donuts comes up with many different torque settings. Some say 19 ft/lbs while others say 58 ft/lbs.

Does anybody know what the correct torque setting is for the top shock nut on rear Bilstein Sport shocks for the 1971 911? Thanks in advance.

For the '84-'89 Carreras, the proper torque for the rear shock top nut is 18 lb.-ft., so 19 is probably right for your '71.

Ditto for the 74... 2.5 mkp or 18 ft lbs.

Thanks porschenut & moneymanager. BTW moneymanager, I hope I never hear phrases like captitulation, have we hit bottom, golden parachute, rescue plan, etc, etc, ever again. I remember the crash in '87 but I was not as heavily invested as I was during these depressing last few weeks. Ouch!

Wish I could say I saw it all coming. I did, but like everyone else, did nothing about it!
You will hear those phrases again, if you're young enough! Just remember: diversify, hold a significant percentage in bonds and cash no matter how much money is being made around you!
