ZDDP in Shell Rotella T

Many of you will probably gain from this info:

I called Shell customer service, 800-231-6950, and spoke to a rep. (forgot to document his name, but very nice fellow) and I asked him how much zinc and phosphorous the new Rotella T 5w-40 synthetic contains. He said that it contains 1300 ppm vs. 1600 in the old formulation. Interestingly, 15w-40 contains 1200 ppm ZDDP. I don't think that loss of 300 ppm will make much difference. So, I am resting easier knowing that the Rotella syn. that I put in 2 months ago won't have to be replaced after all.

The minimum is 1300 ppm right? If thats the case then I too will just buy the 5w-40 synthetic rotella.

ninelevenick 10-13-2008 02:11 PM

That's a very good question. Does anyone know what the minimum is for our cars' engine?

Did you happen to ask about the non-synthetic oils?

Shell Rotella T 15w-40 is a dino oil (non-synthetic).

Lots of reading here (Ultimate Motor Oil Thread or Why we hate CJ4/SM oils) but the answer is.....

That being the case what is the ppm level for Swepco 306 20/50?

I do not have the data available but based on the recommendations of Charles Navarro and Steve Weiner, it is (in the words of the Rolls Royce Brochure) Adequate.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance 15W-50

Boosted, higher viscosity, fully
synthetic formula for today's
longer oil change intervals.

HT/HS applications.
Racing and Flat tappet
applications

SM

ZDDP 1200ppm

I just put the last of my original formula M1 15w-50 in my 993, still have a couple of cases of 15w-50 EP which looks to be good according to M1s data sheets.

The high mileage Mobil one 10w-40 is not SM but SL. Does anyone know the zinc level? Walmart has the 5 qt. jugs for $26.

Why not just run Brad Penn and be done with it!

Because every Autozone carries Shell Rotella oils and many of us would have to order Brad Penn and have it shipped to us, which in my book is pretty darn inconvenient for an oil change.

I don't consider mail ordering BP an inconvenience.

I usually place the order Tuesday afternoon and the box is at my doorstep Thur or Friday in time for the weekend oil change.

Saves my time by not having to take a trip to the auto parts store.

Do you have any local distributors that carry Brad Penn?

Me too, and I buy two cases at a time... :)

No, I’d have to drive two hours to up Portland (during the work week) to get it. Or order it from someplace back east which typically takes a week, or judging by how long it took to get the oil for my gearbox, several weeks.

….On the other hand, there’s an Autozone a mile from my house.

garyR, you're running Brad Penn?

JBO 10-15-2008 10:25 AM

The Rotella T 5-40 has the right ingredients, but several folks, including Steve Weiner, say it is too thin to run in a 911, unless it is winter and you are in a very cold locale. If never really understood why it matters if the second number is high enough (I know we wouldn't want to run a 5-30).

Paulporsche 10-15-2008 10:39 AM

Rotella T also comes in 15W 40. That's thicker when cold.
