911 purchase best day of my life?
No! However, every day that I bought an old 911 was a wonderful exciting day. Back in 1969 just graduating for college I had the choice of buying several neat cars including a three year old 911, an E type Jag or an older Ferrari. Had to have the Ferrari an eight year old red 250 GT cabriolet with 12 cylinders is what I had to have. Wow! On delivery day in the summer of that year I watched them unload the car from the hold of a freighter. The prancing horse was surrounded by huge bags of spaghetti from Italy and to my surprise totally unscathed. A new battery and some gasoline from a nearby service station and she fired up and I drove it through the gate at the docks in Brooklyn. The car was basically good to me for the two years that I drove her. However, the happiest day of my life was two years later, the day I sold her for about the same that I paid. Since then I've had many wonderful Porsches which I always hated to sell and Ferraris and some other Italian stuff that when it finally sold took a real load off my mind. Those were the happiest days of my life Believe me it wasn't because I made any money on those deals. It was just such a relief not to have the fear that at any moment the car could bankrupt me.
Porsches on the other hand have been much more fun than the Ferraris and no intense fears of "unscheduled maintenance." But I am not so sure that I have learned. The mystique and the sound track of the Italian machinery still beckons, but I know after I pull the trigger Porsches always lead me much closer to Nirvana. (Except for that day the Italian *#^% goes down the road with its newly seduced owner.) 911 owners be grateful for what Dr. Porsche has done for you. Diverdan |

Scott,
Just think...if Dr P had done everything right, there might not be a Pelican Parts BBS! Diverdan, I just spent a couple of nervewracking months chasing down a WUR problem. Even so I still enjoyed the experience, and having fixed it, I now get that "like new" feeling and the subsequent "s*** eating grin"!

I somewhat feel the same! Thank you Dr. F.! I've had joyful times behind the wheel of some money needing rides like a euro. 308 GTS, 400i, 328 x2 (probably the only ones that gave me a pur sense without paranoia of unscheduled repair other than Porsches) and to my surprise a few Lotus Esprit's (Chargecooled & S4's & even an old HCI) that actually never let me down & I drive them (almost everyday sunshine & SNOW). That's right, I like to DRIVE them as much as possible. I remember in the dead of winter to onlookers bemusement in Canada (Lotus Esprit with cardboard covering front grille opening to minimize air coming in for more heat) and a couple of Ferrari's, always damaging those Euro. front spoilers...ahhh I mean snow plows in winter! They're cars right? Suppose to drive them right? Pull the trigger...it's the OLD Porsche 911 I always wander back to!

911 purchase best day of my life?
Boy if buying something make that the best day of your life, I'm glad I'm not living your life. The best DAYS of my life were the birth of my children. Summer vacations with my children, holidays with my children, and maybe one day teaching my children how to drive a stick. Tinkering with my collection of Lotuses and Porsche when they are old enough to give Dad a hand. Last edited by ruf-porsche; 10-17-2008 at 09:58 AM.. |

Ruf,
Read the first word of his thread (after the title question).

Diverdan,
Agree with you. Porsche is not that important in the scheme of things. Family, etc. But, I've met some great people as a result of having a p-car. Really good folks. So I'm glad I have it, but it's not my 'baby' or my life. It's just a car. A great car, but just a car. |
