turbo my 3.0 SC.....
Hey guys, I've read the thread about the member who turbod his SC back in '82 with a BRE turbo kit. My car is a '79 SC european, turbo look.
Now he said he's running around 8-9lbs. Of boost with just head studs. I'm sure this is true, since he has had around 60k turbo miles and its been great for him. What size turbo is sufficient for piecing together a kit?!? Also have many other guys turbo'd their SC, if so what all did u do to urbo it?!? I know I will need to fav some stuff myself, which I have access to do so. Thank you for your time! |

I've been reading the old 'UpFixin' books, and adding a turbo is discussed quite a few times. Every time, the same advice is given: If you want a turbo, buy a turbo. If you add one to a NA engine, it will be quite fast, but it will not last particularly long.

There's a long thread in the archives. Richard (RFng) was the lister and my cousin. He passed away earlier this year of a heart attack (about 40).
I had a very loose relationship with the project, but that was only at the beginning. I believed he settled on a TRW/AirResearch T03 turbo w/integrated boost control. Final compressor and turbine housing sizes are unknown. No intercooler at first. He limited boost to about 5-6 psi for about 40-50 more HP (he says). He claims to have spanked many an unsuspecting Vette or equivalent. He did show me a smallish intercooler he sourced from China. Not sure how that worked out. His original 81 or 82 SC engine logged many miles with the turbo at various levels of boost. He eventually sold it as a low compression engine (if you know what I mean), and purchased an '83 as a basis for version 2. I recall: Turbo drain is an issue due to the limited space above the sump for gravity drainage. He eventually plumbed drain oil into the sump cover. I didn't think that would work well. Dunno. He had his own mind. Custom reinforced silicone boots needed for turbo-to-intake connections. Expensive to re-create en masse - needed a very expensive mold made to create. Initially wanted to put together a DIY kit, but soon realize most people didn't have the requisite level of DIY skills to fabricate, modify and install. I also felt he didn't have the patience to fiddle with all the bracketry, hardware and misc. pieces needed for a successful DIY kit. Same with follow up customer service. He tried to enlist garages to sell/install. Dunno how far that went. It's the kind of project only attractive to a small percentage of masochists. The last few years he became consumed with his busy, one-man law office, so he didn't have a lot of time to play around with non-bill paying projects like this. I think he would have lived longer had he pursued more car-related projects and less legal work. Hope this helps. The archives should be better. Sherwood |

Dont miss my classified ad for a DIY turbo setup that I have put together, I am confident that there is not a better deal out there for this type of setup. Do a search and you will soon see that many have done turbo conversions and are very happy.

the way i see it is, i like building my own cars, and after i repaint and all that jazz and after i fall in love all over again with the car i've wanted since i was 14, i dont want to get rid of it, so i might as well make it to what i want, i.e. turbo! thanks again for the insight and help fellas! i hope your pcars are treating you all very nicely! |

question, i just thought of, could a 930 turbo work for this??!? or is it too big/small?
The reason i ask, is because i know where some barely used turbos are....the PO's of them just wanted to upgrade turbos.... |

yes That would work fine.
You are better off using mostly 930 parts it bolts on to what you have and can produce big hp simply and easily. you can even use the CIS from the 930 just run low boost.
