Occasional Gas Smell Issue

I have never smelled gas in my car until yesterday (owner since new). I ran the car to empty (not enough gas to start.) After filling up, I had a few hesitations, but then it ran smoothly. Yesterday, while out for a drive, I nailed the throttle and went through a few gears. I started to smell gas. After returning to normal speed for a while, the smell went away. I pulled over and lifted the engine lid. No gas smell at all. Then while climbing a long hill, I smelled gas again. Finally, after reaching the crest and driving for a while, the smell was gone. In normal (not agressive) driving , the smell did not come back in the next 10 miles before I got home.

Diagnosis?

I had a similar problem with my 74 Carrera on the track - only in the cabin. I checked fuel pump connections etc but couldn't find a leak. In the end I had the fuel line running through the car replaced and the smell went away. The old line had deteriorated with tiny pin holes in a few places that seemed to let fumes out under load ie full throttle. Difficult to say if your problem is the same but that fuel line in your car might be 27 years old.

IS 27 years old.

Maybe the crap from the bottom of the tank caused this in the line.

I have a new gas cap. Not sure what/where emissions vapor lines are.

New gas cap? If you can find an old inner tube or similar piece of rubber, make an extra gasket for the cap. Last time I replaced the cap I had your smell until I realized the new cap didn't seal very well. Worth a try.
