Question 1975 911S sporto cosmetic restore

What we have here is a 1975 sportomatic targa that my girl and i bought as a project to get through the long winter. We plan on doing a cosmetic restore so we can have a little fun this summer when not driving our personal 911s. so this project starts with the ride home and the initial evaluation,

the car is seemingly rust free we will clean and detail and see what we have as time goes by.

i know this isn't a cool project but i will be tackling the daily challenges that we all face with the older 911s.

i will be doing all the work in the garage and try not to source anything out.

i will be using techniques found on this forum I.E. the rattle can wheel restore etc.

the wheels

well we start with the wheels and the under fender cleaning, i found a product called SEM trim paint. I have full paint equipment and a booth but want to use off the shelf doit yourself kinda stuff. this paint comes with a selfetching primer for alloy and a semi flat top coat.
before cleaning and paint
during masking
notice how clean the wheel wells cleaned up with purple power and a scrub brush
notice no front sway bar on the sporto S with alloy calipers?
a pic with one side of wheels done on car

Have fun . That interior is cork. I don't know about originality, but I prefer the 3 spoke.

just an update
have managed to get all electrics working on the car as there was lots of small glitches after sitting around for several years.

the wheels are done and have changed my mind on interior and going to go with a two tone interior mostly because i have a nice set of leather sport seats. the dash pad and knee pads are next they will be brown as soon as i find them. i have also installed some h4s i had around and am going to be adding front fogs and a chin spolier. also going to detail under trunk and replace steering wheel with three spoke .

Thumbs up

Looks like a nice project for you guys. I have a 75' Targa all original and it has the 3 spoke steering wheel. Could you post a pic of one of your Fuchs when completed. I'm thinking about redoing mine.

heres a pic of the wheel after the respray we did not polish the alloy as we are looking to drive the car in the winter a bit. . i used lemon sent easy-off oven cleaner to strip the wheels of all the grime, then cleaned well and rinsed, since i didn't want to scratch up wheels with sand paper, maybe i would want to have them professionally done one day, i used a self etching primer SEM and a top coat from the same company. heres a pic of one of the wheels.
this is what i have for now.

we pulled the battery tonight and removed surface rust and painted as needed and detailed under the hood area. we also changed out the steering wheel with the three spoke,

thanks to al who have purchased parts from me and sold me parts to make this little project work. we will use this little car as our winter driver from time to time.

thank ed

I'll be following this thread as the kind of solutions (cheap, DIY) you are coming up with are directly applicable to my '75, and fit in with my philosophy and bank account!

Good luck and looking forward to seeing how things progress.

How is that not a cool project? Looks great to me. The color is awesome, mirrors, trim, targa bar, etc. all look great. Just because it's not a long hood or an RSR look alike doesn't mean it's not cool. The sporto also is interesting to many. I love these older targas and would like to get one some day.

those Al calipers with stock pistons have a tendency to pit inside. I'd just rebuild them and clean up any pitting that may be forming.

will do on the brakes but first ! drove the car for an extended period in the snow and ice did suprisingly well. but during the drive noticed the charge light comming on and then going out at an idle. so after a bit of research decided to check all grounds and connectoins to battery.

durring this found the housing to be cracked and the the terminals to be a little loose. so i replaced the housing and fan with one i had in the corner on a 3.0 that is destined for this car anyways. so i decided to clean up the fan and housing a bit before i put them on.

degreased the parts with easyoff oven cleaner and super clean and sanded the parts with 220 gritt sand paper and used dupilcolor silver wheel paint on the housing and SEM self etching alloy primer and semi black engine enamal on the fan.

total time start to finish was 3 hours and it made for a clean addition to the car for under 10.00 bucks if ya didnt have the stuff on the shelf allready.

hope the alt. works will find out in the A.M.

thanks ed

Nice project!

I also purchased a 74 but coupé, and some of the work will wait for me too. What are your plase for the excavations on the car? As a winter driver on this model year I would consider doing something before the car will rust inside out. What the factory did those years was never ment to last for 35+ years.
Here in Gemany, where you need to seal your car inside and out if you plan to use it in the winter, there is a dispute between two sides. The one prefer a grease or fat-like substance, the other side uses a product called Fluid Film to seal the excavations.
Hope to see more soon -
best regards

Heiko

Great thread here Ed !! I am not trying to disrupt your thread... just trying to get us all more info on the best ways to address the use of these cars in winter salt & snow.

Heiko referred to "Fluid Film". If it is the same stuff used by the snowplow industry, try this site.

Ed,

I am redoing my 77 Targa on a budget as well. SEM makes a spray vinyl dye in different colors. I had a cork interior in my car, trashed it all. Hated the color. Resprayed the dash in a dark brown SEM using their vinyl primer. Luckily my dash is in perfect condition, no cracks. Came out great. I had my entire interior redone by a local upholsterer for about $1K. She did a great job. Your car is looking great, good job..regards, Bob
