911 will not start

My 1982 911 SC stalled shortly after I started it recently and will not start. The fuel pump seems to work fine as it starts when the ignition is turned but immediately stalls again. Any suggestions?

Fuel filter, contaminated fuel, water in the fuel......intial fuel pressure.....

Try using some ether/quick start. Have an assistant start motor and you give it a quick shot at the intake during the cranking cycle....if it runs for a few seconds.....it's a fuel problem. If not at all it's a spark issue.

Things to look for:

1. Pop off valve may of popped off or allowed a crack of air in preventing starting/running for long.

2. Too much moisture accumulated under the the distributor cap, some people have gone so far as to use a bead of caulk to seal it up. Was it wet out, did you just wash the car?

3. Low on gas maybe?

4. C.I.S. air flow sensor may of gotten stuck (or the rubber seal way back in there is sticking), wipe off the metal flapper thingy while you have the airbox cover off - just tinkering around there gently, can change stuff just enough. I'm not sure if you are supposed to use any spay lubercant in there - read up on it first please.

5. Was it real cold? Frost? the WUR (warm up regulator) might be giving you a hard time - or a vacuum leak, again temperture sensitive.

NOTE: The more information you give, the more percise your answers will be. Start to eliminate some posiblities first. Has this happened before, perhaps in the fall?

I don't know if that's such a good idea..............do a search on this and read up on that - sounds explosive.

I'd first like to thank both of you that responded so quickly. Really do appreciate it.

Went out to my car, took off the airbox cover and found the pop off valve had come off! Replaced and she started right up. First item on the list and I'm back up and running!

Thanks again.

Now don't me a lazy cheap **** like me - fix it for good right away!

I tried to get by with just pushing it back in - worked for about a WEEK. Then two days later happened again, then two hours, then two minutes.

Epoxy glue rated for high heat, must prep/sand area and remove oils with solvant. Protect the intake of the airbox, from the shards of old dried glue. They will want to go in all the wrong spots and will cause problems you that you don't even want to think about - or so I've read.

My only mess-up doing this re-gluing was knocking or touching the wrong thing while cleaning up the old epoxy shards with the vacuum cleaner. Tempermental little beast these old 911's.

Thanks, I could always use a good new tip. I will still read up on this - nothing personal.

Just a quick THANK YOU and expression of amazement once again at how useful this board can be. My '83 SC wouldn't start suddenly (backfired the other day on startup, and then would run for one second and die). Thanks to this note, found out it was the popoff valve. Can runs fine again. KACH22i -- thanks.

I haven't logged in for two years -- a testament perhaps to the reliability of these old SCs.
