compressor alternative
 

I do not have the compressor to inflate the spare tire; can someone suggest an alternative?

will any store purchased compressor work?

I am not sure if the original one was built specifically for this purpose

Yes, any one off the shelf will work. The only thing is our later model P-car's cigarette lighter recepticle is larger in diameter than today's standard so you may need to place some electrical tape to get a better fit.

Why can't you just make a hose adaptor and take a little air from each tire
that is not flat? Just to get you to a safe place. I haven't tried it, but how does it sound to you guys?

if you have a space saving spare you would deflate one of the good ones just to get the spare to even start to looking like a usable tire.

neither of my cars came with the complete tool kit. the old sears compessor i have had for 20+yrs still works and has been inside at least 6 trunks over the years. if you arent going for concours get anything that works.

Deflating the OEM spare is the tricky part. It needs to compress back to original state to fit back in to the compartment.

Remember that it will seem odd the way it inflats but don't worry it will fully inflat like a regular tire. One side will pump up at a time in my experience.

Oh one more thing if you have a 17" put the wheel in the front seat or back for repair.

Since my car came with nothing in the trunk, I bought a small compressor at the hardware store with a cigarette lighter plug in. Gave up trying to get it to work in the P-Car receptacle. Must be a mm/inches thing. Or maybe it's a Whitworth cigarette lighter. Wouldn't put it past the Germans to copy that element of Lucas engineering that causes tightly wound copper to overheat and glow red. The Brits refined that technology in their wiper motors, blower motors and fuel pumps. Who knows (or cares)?

Just pick up two alligator clips from the store and solder them on the compressor leads. Clip directly to battery. Absolutely fool proof, especially when you're in a pickle by the side of the road and need fool proofedness on a dark and stormy night to get home.

Has anyone tried it with the CO2 canister units like for bicycles? I wonder how many canisters it would take.

What got me thinking this is that my old 280Z had a pressurized cylinder about the size of a small fire extinguisher for inflating the spare.
