First gear syncro 915, change out.

Is a full tear down required for a poor first gear syncro.

I can not remember what gears are in the tail of a 915.

Yes.

The only gears accesible without a complete teardown are 5th and reverse.

It can be done at home, though with some special tools and help from the Pelican BBS.

once you get the end cover off, with the trans laying horizontally so the reverse pin doesn't fall into the diff, remove the gears under it, remove the guide fork plate on the side and remove the center housing. the two roller bearings are removed from their shafts and then you can remove 1st gear with the syncro on it. might as well do 2nd then. remove the shift fork bolt and slide off the 1-2 shift sleeve, then 2nd slides off. be sure to center the shift sleeve on reassembly.

About 4 years ago I did 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th synchros and brake bands...resealed everything, had a competent local 911 mechanic push the gears on and off in his press to get at the synchros, and then I reassembled and refilled with Swepco 201. Ran about $900.

Some of the best money spent on my car and really not all that hard if you can handle an engine drop.
