911 1968 sportomatich transmission questions
Dear Sirs and gurus :L)
I own a 68 sportomatic that I just got, I have only had 911's with stock transmissions before. I was wondering if you could tell me where to add transmission oil and what kind of oil would be suitable for the sportomatic transmission? Another important issue to me is, I can not find where to check the oil level of the transmission, where is the dip stick located? I have not driven the car yet as I just got i from overseas and they drained all liquids for fire hazards However when the car is in no gear neutral it seams very hard to push, is this normal? Also is there anything I should be aware of before adding oil and taking for a drive thank you, your help and info is highly appreciated. ![]() |

Hi Thomas
The 'sporto' gearbox is essentially the same as the 901 manual gearbox it is derived from, but with a torque converter added. The torque converter uses engine oil via a pump on the engine. This means you look after the gearbox section like a manual with good quality manual gearbox oil... everyone seems to love Swepco brand if you can get it in Denmark. I have used Castrol Syntrax which is designed for a a combination gearbox/differential such as Porsche and Subaru. There is no dipstick for the gearbox - you fill it at the hole halfway up the case until it flows out - yes it's tedious especially if the oil is cold! Being hard to push may be a symptom of the brakes - make sure you flush the brake circuits and bleed them well before driving. Hope that helps a little Cheers

Correct me if I'm wrong but, if the engine isn't running the clutch will be engaged and therefore when pushing you are also trying to spin the torque converter even if the transmission is in neutral.
