1981 backfire issues
Assuming I have checked, eliminated, or repaired any potential vacuum leaks.
Could the backfiring simply be a mixture problem? I have never messed with the mixture and the fuel supply has been cleaned, repaired and checked completely. |

You can check the operation and mixture of your version of CIS with an analog dwell meter. There is a test plug under the plastic cover on the right side of the engine compartment. Hook up the dwell meter to the green/ white stripe terminal and check the duty cycle cold, warm closed loop, and open loop WOT. Much better than an online guessing contest.

End of the season success
Got the hex head tool from Hobbo Freight and turned the air to fuel mixture 1/4 turn CW.
The engine started right up and ran great. Everyone that has helped me thank you. Its been 4 summers of hell with this car. I went another 1/8 turn and i could not be happier at this time. So the idle is at 1050 rpm No backfireing when i race the engine. Started great with ambient temp of 50F. Unfortunately I am in northern Ohio and the season is over. I plan on taking it out next weekend, then I have to pack it away for the winter in the barn with all the other stuff, Corvette, tractor etc. Again thank all of you for your help. those of you on the west coast. Ill be out there in the spring . Vegas,Modesto, LA, then on to Phoenix for spring traing with my Cleveland Indians. if any of you want to have lunch and tip back a few beers let me know Steve Otto |

Does the back fire occurs when you let off on the gas? Check to see if you don't have an exhaust leak. Do it at night and you should be able to see the flames (?) from the back fire.

That was an easy one. Congrats!
But how did your mixture get 5/8 turn out of wack to begin with?
