915 in SWB: flange recommendation/ options

The key words 915 and SWb are too short to do a search. Does some one recall a thread about installing a 72 915 in a SWB and using the 108mm flanges? I am aware that I can have made adapter plates but what I am curious about is whether it's possible to swap the stub axles in the arms for the LWB 108's.

Thanks for your input.

Richard

I think you use the early flanges that were 4 bolt or the late 915 Carrera have the big flanges.
Try searching "flange sizes"

Richard, You can not swap the stub axles. SWB and LWB are different. I had my SWB stub axles modified for later LWB flanges so I could use 930 CV joints on a set of 66 SWB banana arms. Lots of work but it turned out great.

other detail on installing a 915 into the swb
1) shift shaft in the tunnel- the 915's is slightly shorter. Don't remember off the top of my head, but one of the other contributors here can tell you how much to cut this tube (or find a 915 one cheap)
2) shift tower should be changed to a 73-86.
3) Pedal assembly clutch operating shaft and clutch cable need to match the year of the gear box. Exception is if you find a 76 with "around the corner" clutch operating lever on the bottom of the gear box. Those were terrible as they killed the clutch cables prematurely. Get a 74-75 operating lever and cable in that case. If you install a 77 or newer with the helper spring set up, then you should find a 78-86 pedal assembly and install that. The floor will need a little massaging to make it fit
4) clearance on tunnel hump; the 915 is larger diameter in the seat tunnel area. So a 5 lb mallet will be needed to massage each side of the seat hump to allow clearance
5) If installing a electric speedo trans, then you will need the sender on the box and a conversion kit (No. Hollywood Speedo sells these) OR get a late model electric speedo and have the face converted to match your other guages. Run a 16 guage pair of wires down the tunnel (properly secured out of the way of cables and handbrake) and up into the dash to hook up to the electric speedo
6) Clutch /flywheel will depend on the engine fitted

Mark can you tell a little more what you did for your modification? Did you cut and weld or did you make an adapter plate?

Thanks the others as well for their input.

Richard
