DOT brake lines did not fit - Why?
 

First off - Pelican Parts Customer Service is great. The accepted my return. They have been helpful.

But what really happened?

I bought a set of DOT braided brake hoses. Mine are ~10 years old, and I thought I'd replace them. Pelican shipped them USPS and they showed up in 2 days!!

However, they didn't fit. The end fittings are too large. When I removed the old line, the new threaded line slipped right over the threads, and barely made contact.:confused:

If you look closely, the lower (new) ID threads are bigger than the outside of the old nut. The old line uses a 11mm wrench while the new one needed a 15 mm. All lines on my car (front and rear) have the smaller fitting. None of the new lines were going to fit.

Pelican Parts said to send them back, which I have done. Thanks. :)

So to move on:

1) Has anyone else had a similar problem with them? Part number PEL911-SSDOT

2) Anyone recently replace there lines? Did they also have the 11mm nut size?

Happens all the time. You have to tell a Pelican salesperson what exactly your lines are. Otherwise you get just lines. It would help all concerned if you told us what the car is. I suspect its an early car.

The line will not fit because the other line has a "Male" fitting and the one you have has a "Female" fitting.

It looks like you already have some SS lines on the car?

If so it appears that the "things not in PET" are metric-an adapters (which are not installed correctly).

The DOT line should connect to where you indicate by arrow in the picture.

Yes, they were installed 65,000 miles ago by the PO.

Metric to AN adapter? How can you tell? I would never have thought that there were adapters in there, but it makes sense.

What do you mean not installed correctly? Can you be more specific?:confused:

I'm just figuring that out. Perhaps I should ask Pelican Parts to ship me the lines back....:rolleyes:

I recently replaced my soft lines and I can tell you that there's definitely some type of adapter in place in the pics you provided. The hard line coming from the caliper mates directly with the soft line at the strut body, and then directly with the hard line coming from the master cylinder at the chassis.

I guess I'll never stop learning about my car.

My '88 does not have the fitting in question. The SS hose extends through the strut tab and screws directly onto the hard line.

That would make sense, but the shoulder on the line is not big enough to not go thru the bracket hole, or is it? These are what I see at the flex to hard unions:

And I see in my own diagram that one of each type is used. My original point was that parts suppliers often times send out the wrong lines due to the different ends and even lengths (IIRC, the 914 uses a longer line).

I guess I never challenged my assumption the car was correct. Apparently it is not. So, I'll order another set of lines this Winter, and get those adapters out of there.

Yes, it looks as if you did have the right lines. As stated above, They go right through the bracket, and connect right on to the hard line. I have done bunches of these, and never seen a set like yours with the fittings. Best of luck

I had exactly the same issue. I could not figure out why I kept getting the incorrect lines. A couple years ago I gave up and had custom lines made (that were a little too short) for the front. I just saw this thread and it's right on. There is an adapter that allowed for SS lines from back in the day. Took the adapter off and the new lines fit right on. I believe the old SS lines were a bit larger in diameter which was supposed to be an upgrade but latter disproved.

The new lines went right on with the adapter removed and the peddle feels firmer than before.

Mystery solved :-)

Many months later....

I bought another set of lines from PP. Took the AN-Metric adapters off. New SS lines fit just fine.
