What's your longest 911 road trip?
This summer my wife and I decided to see the USA after having both lost our jobs. Architecture is tough. We embarked on a mind cleansing, back-roads only (no interstates allowed) road trip that re-invigorated our souls.
We left Boston and headed south to Key West Florida, maneuvered our way through New Orleans to Texas, New Mexico and Arizona and on to the West Coast. Coastal all the way to British Columbia Canada and back home. 2.5 months, camping the entire way in a '78 SC. 14,300+ miles. No maintenance besides oil changes and a new steering rack when we got home; tune-ups before we left and when we returned. It was a once in lifetime experience for us and I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar opportunity and had such an amazing bonding with their P-car.... and their wife... Share your road trips, it's what our cars were made for! Brian

Ron, I couldn't get into your thread regarding your return home from your road trip, but i must tip my hat to you. Most impressive. I see your passion and I aspire.
I'm a relative new-comer to the scene, however the need to travel runs deeply. If I can maintain a career of road trips like yours, all is well.... See if you can re-post your return links.. Thanks- b.

Santa Monica to Charlotte twice. First time when we bought the E. Second time I had shipped it back to Otto for a new motor. Also a "shake down" cruise to No Ca both time before heading home.
Two wonderful, fun filled trips!

b. - sorry to hear about the rough employment situation, hopefully that'll come around quickly for you and your wife. Late this summer my wife and I took a New England road trip in our 993, covering around 2500 miles in a week and a half. We also stayed on the smaller roads, except for the sprint home. It was one of the most enjoyable vacations I've taken in quite a while. Thanks for sharing some of your vacation story with us...now we're ready to hear more of those details.

Hell, I dunno...Orygun to L.A. and back? Orygun to Denver area and back? East of the Mississippi never interested me much. Oh, almost forgot. Ory-gone to Canada and back? You see, most of my life, all I had was two days...tops. Then there was the two day trip to Hawaii...no Porsche involved.

The longest would be from Miami to Chicago, when I bought the car on eBay. About once a month, I drive 800 miles round trip to visit family in KY.

~720 miles
Louisville, KY to Baton Rouge, LA after deciding to purchase my '72 a month ago. My Fiance decided she didnt want me to drive a 31yr old car back alone, so we drove up the day before in my truck and she followed me home. The car checked out great on the PPI, but we ran into start/idle problems on the way home. 36hrs later we had done about 1500 miles round trip and were back home on virtually no sleep. Anybody ever seen a 6ft tall blonde bombshell push start a Sepia Brown 911? What a hoot! I wouldnt trade it for the world. If she didnt leave me after that, I know she isnt going anywhere

Took a roninlb inspired trip in Jan 03 from Olympia WA down to SoCal mainly via sideroads and the PCH. Met the wife in LA for a weekend, she flew home and I continued for another week or so out in the deserts of CA and NV. Had a blast. Hauling butt all over the high and low desert areas, with some great jams and perfect driving weather, that is after getting out of the NW. Might just have to do it again this coming January. The wife wants to spend some time in San Diego. She can't do the long drives due to a previously broken back issue. What I would give to be able to take a 2.5 month roadtrip. Brian it sounded like a great adventure.

Roughly 1600 miles, I flew up there and drove it back without a hitch. Beautiful countryside in the west coast, and lots of smooth fast miles in the desert.
It took two days, stopping overnight outside Sacramento, and then a small jaunt into Laughlin to shoot some dice! Them home . Not long after that The rust got to the car and it was down for about a year and a half to replace and repair panels, and while down I ran into a good deal on the 2.7 liter motor (thanks to K9Handler.) But I'm driving it again and enjoying every minute of it! So, Brian- What did you think of the Southwest while you rolled though?

I recon you win Mr, Hilliard. I did about 3,000 miles in the '79 SC on a driving surfing camping trip taking about three weeks, and setting off a few days after I got the car. Mind you, our country is so small I'd need to drive around and around the island to get any more miles clocked up on it than the 3,000.
Good luck on the job situation, and you have the right idea, quality of life is more important. |

The first time I ever drove my '73S targa was from Memphis TN to Portland OR this past May. It rained so hard through most of Kansas that everyone but me and a few semis pulled over to wait out the storm, and it snowed through most of Wyoming, but it was one of the most memorable and enjoyable trips of my life. A great way to start a relationship with a new (albeit 30-year old) car.

Road Trips in Classic Cars?
Interesting that you ask the question, because I have wondered the same. Now that I am waiting delivery of my 73E, our first trip will be from CT to Chicago in March. Then it will be bi-weekly trips to various B&B's to keep the wife happy while we enjoy our first Porsche.
But she asked me last week about a trip up the California coast, and how much fun would that be!!!! Hey, I'm all for it. But I don't know about taking the time to drive from Chi-town to CA and back in addition to the vacation, or the wear and tear on the car. Have any of you had a car trucked cross country so that you could meet up with it for a driving vacation, or a PCar get-together? I had concerns about long distances on a 30 year old car, but maybe I don't really need to wonder. Brian, I don' t know what is more impressive, that you took a 2.5 month drive in your 25 year old Porsche, or that you had the space to put camping gear in it!!?!?!?! Good luck finding new work. It's a tough market out there. larry

Parts Obsolete in Oregun has a yearly camp out every spring. There is a swap meet on a Sat and a visitor voted concours on Sunday. I arrived on a Fri morning and didn't leave till Wednesday. Maybe 100 P cars attend from many many states. It's mostly a 356 Outlaw crowd, which is real interesting. You can camp on the grounds or do a local motel.
