Ocassional loud trans Howl

My daily driver 1976 911s, after 5 min. of driving it lets out a lowed howling noise that always lasts for 3 or 4 seconds then slowly abates .. I thought it was the right rear wheel bearing, but I replaced that two weeks ago.. Now lately I might it twice in my twenty min. drive to work... With my increased awareness of the trans, I"m hearing other barely audible trans noises.. Also, I can't get it into 1st. gear untill almost stopped without grinding,, is this normal? I have normal 90w trans oil,, wonder if the Swepco 201 would help...? any reply's would be appreciated,, g rad

How many miles are on your trans. and when was the last time you drained your fluid? This might be a good time to drain your transmission fluid and see whats comes out. I can't answer your question on the howling noise. My first guess would have been the wheel bearings, but you took care of that. Again, I think you should drain the fluid and see it everything looks OK.

Captain Obvious here again.

You've checked the oil level, of course.

Failing that, I'd change the oil and try Swepco.

Could it be your other wheel bearing? Whining, clicking, knocking. All those noises have a way of resonating around the cabin so locating them is difficult.

As a side note my transmission makes several different noises at different times also. I figure I'll chase them when I get to the next clutch replacement.

No, but my original 915 was like that, when there were no dog teeth left on 1st... No wonder even double-declutching and speed-matching didn't help... You can drive around the problem, usually. At least with a 3.3.

Synchros, brake bands etc. that aren't working will behave exactly the same. Don't skimp on these if the box is apart anyway. I did. My bad.

Luckily, an opportunity to redeem yourself always seems to present itself whenever you do skimp on these cars...

Last time around, the 915 got whatever it needed, and I can downshift into 1st as easily as any other gear. Of course, you rarely do this once you're properly conditioned...

If you're sure the noise is from the trans, I'd investigate, pretty quick. I think it's much cheaper to fix (even properly) a 915 that didn't actually break and damage a bunch of other stuff in the process.

you thought it was the right wheel bearing ? my girl friend early this year came to me with this same noise on her 75 carrera, when she would drive it while not fully warm she would get a howl that lasted only a few sec. i got into the car with her and we went for a ride wouldn't do it as car was to warm. the next morning she started the car waited till it dropped off of high idle and away we went the noise was loud and you could feel it in the seat of your pants, after a bit of research i let the car cool down and started it and let it run waited for it to howl, and it did while poking around in the back found it to be the oil bypass making noise, not sure why changed the oil that wasn't old and filter and noise has went away, every once in awhile you can here a small sound from the filter area.

just one of my tranny noise experiences.

your tranny sounds like it need work but there is nothing worse than rebuilding your tranny and the noise in still there.

good luck

Thanks guys,, I'm going to have a look at the trans level and drain plug today... Never thought of a engine oil breather noise... The fresh Brad Penn oil is just below the full mark,, I know it should be in the middle but haven't drained some out yet,, but will just to cover that contingency,, 5th gear has a low wine also,, so I'm getting my head around a trans drop this winter.... Just got laid off from Heavy Equipment Operating,, getting cold with no cab in Illinois... thanks all,
