Windshield for 86

Have an 86 carrera coupe, the windshield or is it wind screen is getting sort of cloudy, you know from road debris and such. Was wondering if there are new ones still for sale (mine has the built in radio antenna) and what would be a going price for one. Did a search here and didn't find anything. Still wondered what would happen if the vehicle in front of me lost something or kicked it up with its tires and broke my windshield what I would/could do as most cracks over 1/2" won't pass safety inspection. At this point is it a used windshield market only? Is it possible one could just call mobile auto glass and they would have a replacement or be able to get an origonal.

Have you tried John Walkers solution of cleaning with 0000 steel wool?

For what its worth some guys were pretty excited recently with the effect that a clay bar had.
Don't know if this will help with clouding but it sure stuck out in my head.

Luck,

Scott

Most of the replacement windshields sold in the USA are Sigla brand, made in Germany. Most Porsches have had Sekurit or Sigla glass as original equipment for years.

I recently had the OEM Sigla windshield in my 993 replaced with a new one. I actually tried to get a PPG windshield, but evidently they are no longer made. I used an authorized PPG installer, BTW.

The Sigla glass is "softer" than the USA PPG...more susceptible to sandblasting and minor chipping, which is why I wanted a PPG. My car has only 55K relatively easy miles and the original Sigla windshield was so sandblasted that summertime visibility was becoming a problem. And there is no sand flying around here in North Georgia...just red clay!

A word of caution when getting a new windshield installed in any Porsche: Purchase OEM rubber seals, as some glass shops use cheaper aftermarket seals that do not fit as well, and sometimes shrink noticeably. I learned this the hard way on my ex-3.2 Carrera.

After a little help with locating threads to windshield and reading them I decided to buy some of the products from auto geek to clean, polish and seal my windsheild first before doing a change out. Haven't even tried looking for a replacement windsheild yet but it looks as if there may be some acceptable new replacements available. Products should be here at end of week giving the weekend to try it out, will report back how it works. Decided not to try the clay bar as some of the small scratches and chips may be a little to much for it to do any good.

The clay bar is great for picking up contaminants from the surface but it won't do anything for pits or scratches. A glass polish should help though.
