Need ino/help to export a car from USA

Hello guys,

Recently, I found a car in Milton, Massachusetts.NOw, I have to pay the seller and deal with the title. I found a company on the web which is doing this kind of work (buyerservicesinternational.com) but they don't answer to my email. So, I would like to know if somebody is aware about an other company or method for helping in this kind of purchase?
Thank you in advance

Olivier

Hello Olivier,

as I wrote in my PM - here some more Info:
- you intend to export to Belgium, so Antwerp would be the nearst harbor to ship to
- if the car is older than 30 years look out for Rotterdam, because with a car of that age you pay only 7% Total Tax and customs duty
- So if the car is in Milton you could ask the owner to deliver to the nearest harbor - Boston or New York; you could also use a shipping company (in the US or in Belgium) to get the car delivered (full service or delivery/unloading at harbor)
- in case of transport you could chose between RoRo and Container. For RoRo your car must be drivable, because it gets driven on a big "ferry". Don't ask if the laoding guys respect your car... Or you take a container - but you also do not know how the guys load it - and probably do not want to know. I think there are insurances, but it will be hard to get them pay for a ding while loading or unloading the container. If you chose container, you can also put a lot of things inside the car. Ask about the maximum of fuel in your gas tank, because it may be limited.
- prices range from 900$ for RoRo (including Paperwork and Handling) from New York up to 1400$ from LA in Container. Remember you have to pay additional 500-600 €uro for Unloading, Handling and Paperwork PLUS Tax and Customs Duty. Those costs are counted upon the total price (car+shipping) and in Germany you pay 10% Duty and 19% Taxes. Don't try to lower the car price, because in case of doubt the customs will estimate the true value of the car.
- you could organize everything by yourself, but I would recommend a full service done by an international shipping company. They have enough experiences and some of them specialize in car shipping and have agents all around the world.

good luck!

Heiko

Greath write up. You almost covered every aspect of shipping process. Since I ship cars to E.Europe on dayly basis I can add few more details to that.
1. Transporting car from NH to NJ ( Newark, NJ) where is my warehouse will run you approx 400$
2. Car Shipped by container to Antverpen, Belgium ( 3 cars/container) approx 900$
3. US customs clearance , title and all documentation forwarding to your providet address- approx 50$
4. 500-600 euro for Unloading, handling paperwork to me seems way to much. Will check and give you correct amount later ( if you show interest)
5. Tax and Customs duty it is your responcibility and best way to find out to call local customs.
6. If car is shipped by container , Heiko was right, you can load as much stuff in YOUR car as it fits. Everything outside of you car is additional.
7. Fuell must be drained and battery disconected ( that is very strict). Fine for dissobeing that, if car to be inspected at port, 25K USD. Ask me how I know.
8. Shipping by RoRo. You car will be on one of boats decks. 15 days in open watters !? from NJ to Antverpen.

p.s. If you want to see how your car will be loadet into container? let me know and I will tell to film the whole process. It is not that scary as it might seem.

Good luck ,
KG

Thank you

Thank you for the information and all the good ideas. If someone knows how to make a safe transaction between a seller and a buyer living abroad...
It's a 1974 911 going to Belgium...

Hello Olivier,

when you import a 74 car I would recommend import over the Netherlands. You will only pay 7% in total, instead of 10% duty and 21% VAT for Belgium. Once the car is in the Netherlands and you paid your 7% it is officially imported into the EU and you can bring the car to Belgium.
Your question regarding a safe transaction:
Method 1 means Trust. You wire the money to the seller (after you did a PPI before you decide to buy the car). The seller handles Title to the shipping company, and the car is on the way.
Method 2 means controlled trust. You and your seller agree on using a service like escrow. This ensures that your money is being transfered when the title is handed to the shipping company - not before.
Method one is for free, method two costs between 1 and 2 % of the total sum.

Did you perform a Pre-Purchase Inspection to verify the car turns out to be ok?

best regards

Heiko

Hello KG,

good to know, maybe that I will be in need of a shipping agent in the near future. Do you handle specific locations and harbors? I am currently looking for a 30 year old 911 to import over the Netherlands.

best regards

Heiko

ps: one method of loading a container you won't know about:

I usually pay 12-1400$ for the car to be picked up at a US adresses, shipped to the nearest harbour, shipped from there to Bremerhaven(Germany) and from there to Norway(Port of Drammen) This is by RoRo, not container(to expencive) Never had any body damage from the shipping. Cars ranging from 1971 911S to 997 C2S.

Shipping company: www.jetcarrier.com

Good tips again Heiko.

The Escrow method will be very useful in that case and that's what I was looking for...

I took a look on google at some companies which can offer this kind of services and found escrow.com and buyerguardian.com(looks new).

Hi Heiko,
what do you mean by "specific locations and harbors"?

what I meant was that I am also still looking for a reasonable car, and depending where I will find one, it may make more sense to ship from the nearest harbor than to transport the car from coast to coast.

best regard

I am looking to ship a car from US to Europe, April next year, as I will combine the car pick up with a road trip I am open to a place on the east coast from where to ship. Can you PM me at michel.vereeken@skynet.be?

BTW shipping to Belgium is a no no. Our customs charge the hell out of you even though the are prohibited by law from doing so. Rotterdam is the place to disembark your car.

Thanks

Michel

Heiko, in that case, yes I can help shipping cars from major ports such as:
1. New York ( actually Newark, NJ) that would be my first choice ,since I am here and everything that comes to my warehouse will be taken care as it must. We talking Porsches . Every imaginable service can be provided.
2. Miami ( my associate has shipping company there. Pictures upon delivery provided instantly. loading can be recorded at additional cost. Cargo or one car insurance while in transit can be arranged)
3. Los Angeles ( have a company that helps with shipping) Shipping to Europe costs way more than from NYC, but sometimes saving on transport cost-to-cost pays to do it from there.
4. Houston ( contracting company with headquarters in Chicago, but their office in Newark, NJ is run by person I know very well)

Never did shipped nothing from Boston,MA ; Seattle, WA ; Baltimore,MD or Norfolk ,VA .

And if you need inland transportation I also have Brokers license for that. Prices are not bad. For example :

78 911CS delivery taken in Huntsville, AL from Chatham,NJ ( 1200 miles)
Pick Up : Saturday ( Nov.16.2008) at ********e in Chatham, NJ
Drop of : Monday ( Nov.17.2008) at Huntsville, Alabama
Cost : 450$
Car status: runs and drives ( registered in NJ)

Of course transportation price is such low because I was involved in purchase transaction and did not charged for arranging transportation.
