Bought a stock 996 Am/Fm CD for my '85
Hey guys,
I found a very clean little used stock Porsche Am/Fm CD stereo that a guy pulled out of his 996. He was upgrading to some sort of Nav system. I got the two stock amps, four speakers and the security code. Is this still a Becker unit provided to Porsche and what of this should I use besides the head unit? Will I be able to plug an ipod into it? and Will the wiring be similar to the stock AM/FM Blaupunkt cassette deck that I have in the dash. Will I need a different tray to slide into (probably)? Any direction will be greatly appreciated I have not seen the unit yet. Thanks guys, Scott

Is it even the same size as an old 911 unit?
I can't remember looking at the stereo in the last newer 911 I drove. I do know that most late model stereos are not thin and compact like the old days. That would be sweet if it works, though.

I installed a Becker CDR220 that came out of a 996. Assuming the one you have is the same it will fit perfectly. I just installed the head unit - no amps. You should be able to have a cable made up to mate the new unit to the old harness. The PO had ripped out the old wiring harness so I just had a plug made up to splice directly onto the wires by SWStereo.
Oh, I also had to get a reverse faceplate because the stock one is difficult to read.

Thank you guys. A little mystified by the reverse faceplate comment. Does this mean that the faceplate is removable and another can be sourced.
Glad to know that ipod cables can be had. Do you know if they are simply RCA cable outs? Also happy that it is still a Becker head I'm told that they are far superior for simple FM reception. I wonder if Porsche used Becker amps and if so whether I should re-use them. Thanks for the help. Scott

Realized that maybe just maybe I'm not the first guy to think of this soooo....... I did a search.
Much has been written! Thank you for the help. Anyone know a stereo shop in the Los Angeles area familiar with Porsche. I have an '85 and want to upgrade to a Becker CD 220. Thanks again, Scott

Scott - I put one in my SC, and it's painfully easy. Just buy the connecting wires from Becker, you'd be surprised how quickly it takes shape. I'd guesstimate about 30 minutes at best. The reverse plate is ideal for non 996 or Boxster cars...I can snap a pic if you want...

Jeff,
Thanks for the encouragement! I'm intimidated by electrical projects but I put my own stereos in my Datsun Z's when I was a kid and will give it a crack. I'm certain that I didn't get the slide in drawer (the rig is in L.A.) for the unit. Should I shop for that or do you think Becker will still be able to provide. I'd love to see a picture and I'll document my neophyte install for the board when I get home. Scott

Scott,
Here is a link to how it looks in a cork interior (my cork interior). Finally proud enough to show pics of my SC You don't need a cage to install, it slides in and can be removed with keys. When you receive the radio, you will see vertical slots on the faceplate - left and right. Those slots are made for a key (rod actually) to go in there, making the ends squeeze in. The radio should look like it has ears; they press in and create pressure holding the radio in place. What you do is plug the wires in the back (through the radio hole), wire it up, and blammo...press it into place - and listen for the snap (the ears extending)...finally the most important is enjoy. I live in South County, but am up in Cypress about every other Sunday; if you find it's more than you think you can do, buzz me at 714.227.9884 and we can meet in Cypress and install together - though it may cost you a beer. I put a MOCH-1 under dash cover in mine and it looks fantastic, hides all of the wires and it's a second set of speakers too. He is in Orange, if you want one, I can pick it up for you to install at the same time (30 second endeavor). Good luck and let me know if you need a hand.

Jeff,
Can't thank you enough! This sounds very much like something that I'll enjoy doing instead of dread. You have a pm. Love the guys on this forum, restores my faith in humanity. Scott

Scott -- Thanks for the PM, if you need the key/rod, let me know, i have one and would be more than happy to put a stamp on it and mail to you when needed.
I have only done cars/coffee once, it was fun, but there weren't many Porsche guys there, in fact there was only 1 other air cooled porsche there, and it was a junk heap. It would be fun (when you get local...sorry for your reasons for being in FL) to do Cars/Coffee again. Do you belong to PCA/GPX? I do, but haven't done anything for a few years w/them...go figger...kids. Lemme know when you're local! JMc JMc

Jeff,
Thanks for the tool offer. Terrible to push that baby home and remember one more thing...... I am a member in name/sticker only to PCA and unfamiliar w/GPX. There is a cars/coffee that meets in La Canada once a month with some good Porsche guys and allot of bling stuff. I've lamented lately at not involving myself more. They do occasional canyon cruises too. I think we'll be able to find an excuse that even a busy dad can do. Will call when local again. Regards, Scott

[QUOTE=4flyboy;4267615]Thank you guys. A little mystified by the reverse faceplate comment. Does this mean that the faceplate is removable and another can be sourced.
Take a look at the photo in the thread posted by Jeffrey2. You can see that the edges of faceplate in the center just inboard of the knobs. That faceplate flips down and the CD slot is behind it. The faceplate can also be removed completely - it just pulls straight out. The unit shown already has the reverse faceplate with black letters on a light background. Coming out of the 996 it will likely have a dark background with light letters which are damn hard to read in daylight. IIRC I got the reverse faceplate either from SW Stereo or Becker of North America.

The curve of the dash that the CDR220 is designed for will not show the faceplate very well (almost not at all) in a 911. I ordered a plate that will work perfect for my 911 from Becker in New Jersey for $75 with a $50 dollar core charge. They ship very fast and refund instantly on the core return. A very good buying experiance. I have the phone number at work and will update this tommorrow.

Great to know guys I'll get started on that from here. I'll assume since it came straight out of a 996 that it will definitely need to be reversed?

RWebb,
I'll post the whole thing when I get home to L.A. (indefinite right now). Should be a decent contribution as I don't know what I'm doing. I've had lots of help/suggestions here. S.
