84 Turbo Look w 240k value check
Looking for some input on value for a high mileage Factory Turgo Look.
This is a factory car w the factory 930 suspension, brakes... It has about 240k miles, seats and head liner need to be replaced. Dash is pulling. There are other maintenance issues. Goind down the street is looks like a million bucks. Looking closer you can see nicks and scratches but not damage or dents. Car is red w cork and is a looker. Car has never been modified or bastardized. Has 7&8/16 Fuchs, new front rotors and pads, limited slip transmission with weak first gear syncro. Holds all gears and makes no funny noises. Has typical oil leaks. Looked underneath and looks very solid with no corrosion or damage. One of the oil cooler lines is pinched from a jack. Starts easy, runs and pulls strong. Would be a great basis for an IROC, RSR back date, EFI turbo conversion, or race car. It is a close Friend's and he dose have to sell it. I am interested but already have a 85 normal I bought this year that I love so ether one may be available. Car is in Sacramento. What is the verdict. Thanks.

recently saw a minty, low mileage turbo-look for around $35k so there's the top for you.
How would the #'s work for an RSR look..... Paint: $7,000 3.6 w/ tranny: $15,000 Lindsey wheels: ??? RSR Interior: $2,500 From there????

You don't mention anything about the engine, so I will assume original unopened engine, not been rebuilt.
In today's market, $9-12K. |

Dose not look like motor has been opened. No evidence of any tweaking anywhere.
If I did an IROC I would just paint the bumpers and tail, not the car but that is me. Would sell the tail and Turbo bumpers and put toward the parts. Cat bypass it, convert the muffler to a sport muffler, fix the leaks and do the drive train later. Hard to make an argument for a 3.6 conversion on any car from an economic point of view at $15-20k but would be fun. Keep em coming. Thx.

Turbo Look Value...
I guess since I'm a TL owner I'm a little defensive about the low ball figure that "the" has throw out. I agree the market is soft and maybe the car isn't a 100 point show winner, but because of the Turbo brakes, suspension, wide body you would be hard pressed to replace those items for 5 grand on a good day... Now if those add on's had no value to you then "the" prices might represent today's Carrera prices.

Without seeing the car, I don't think that $12k is a unreasonable amount given what little we know. FWIW- I was in a similar situation last April and ended buying a 87' TL coupe with a 153k on the clock. The engine had allegedly been rebuilt but the owner could not find the records to prove it. Based on the records available, which were quite extensive, the mechanic did not recommend offering over $12k for the car. I was able to talk to PO's previous mechanic and they had copies of the records of the rebuild done by a reputable shop. The PPI showed that it needed a clutch and a bunch of fairly typically repairs that most 20 year old cars need. Namely, suspension, fuel lines, etc. Leak down was 3% or better. The body is straight but the paint is thin in some areas and will get a repaint down the road. The PO was asking $20k. I paid $15k. Hope this helps.

I bought at my TL Cab with about 90K miles and fresh engine rebuild (not stock) for $17,200.00 in late 2006. I think the prices have not changed all that much. But you need to find a seller that must sell.

Paid 15K for my 84 Carrera with about 200K miles, somewhat mint condition with upgrades (H4 K&N Nardi sport exhaust etc..) last May. Tend to think you're in the same ballpark figure if not lower.

I had a TL for a long time, I love them and think they are one of the best 911s of the 80s.
And yes, they can sell for a very high amount. I sold mine for very big money. BUT, the ones that get big money are sold to members of the "Church of the 491." These car definitely have a cult following of collectors, who will pay top dollar. The thing is, they only pay top dollar for bone stock, original, and LOW MILE cars. That's their bag. Low miles, and arguing about how many were made. 240K with no engine rebuild kills the value. The engine is living on borrowed time, the top end is certainly worn, and when the top end needs to be done, it wouldn't make sense to not to the whole thing on a 240K engine. I'd be very, very surprised if you could find a buyer at more then $12K in this market for that car. |
