H4 Headlight Upgrade - need someone to check their H4s ...

I installed the Bosh H4 upgrade (part#301-800-103x2) on my 89 911 cab and noticed that both lights have the same pattern on the same side. It seems that it should be different so I was wondering if someone with H4s can check and see if they have the same pattern. TIA Andrewhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1225565050.jpg

Mine are like that, too.

H-4's are similar to my H-1's and the pattern is the same on both sides so it aims the light at the right place on the road if I am not mistaken the pattern for a RHD lens is reversed .

Yes, the light will be aimed when on low beam down and to the right so as to not blind oncoming drivers.

I guess down and to the left when the driver is on the right hand side.

You're exactly right. The RHD/LHT (Left Hand Traffic) lenses also have an arrow in the glass lens denoting that (points to the left, IIRC).

Interestingly, H5 lenses throw a completely even light pattern with no cut-off at all. If aimed correctly, you're good to go regardless of which side of the road you happen to be driving on.

Go here for aiming and a picture of the light beam

That's probably why they don't seem to provide as much illumination: they throw the light all over the place instead of just where it is required.

+1 on the Daniel Stern lighting website. Lots of info from a well informed guy.

Any opinions on whether to put a clear protective cover to prevent cracks? Is that overdoing it or is there a real risk of a stone chipping the lens?

my lens are made of quartz and have been on the car for nearly 23 years without a clear cover my thought is wrong place wrong time and that plastic will not prevent the lens from breaking.

I'm using Xpel paint protection rather than the headlight material, much thinner and enough for me. I do use the headlight protection (made by 3M BTW) on my lower fogs due to the more vertical angle of the light versus the H4's.

Must disagree - I found H5's to be if anything, too tightly focused, but quite usable on unlit roads on either dip or main beam. Huge upgrade from the joke sealed beams, just not quite as good as the Bosch H4 reflector/lens.

Which are second only to Cibie H4s, IMHO.

+1 on Daniel Stern. Guy does it for a living - and I don't mean "sells lighting bits".
