Question on early turbo tail

Does this type of tail use the same rubber lip as a standard Carrera whale tail?
I looked around but I cannot seem to find where to buy one.

How come some of them have a larger grill on the tail and some have a smaller grill?
And how about cooling? I assume cooling should be more then enough. But you know what they say about assumption being the mother....

here's the tail:

Thanks guys,
G

The rubber is different from the later Carrera tails. Yours takes a lip with rounded sides (pic below), the later Carreras have a flat area on the sides. The rubber you need is NLA. There were some good reproductions out there but I don't think you can buy a new one anywhere unless it's NOS. The Turbos had the second grille at the back. The early Carrera 3.0 and Weissach Edition did not .

I would say the answer to you question is yes, if you are referring to the Carrera whale tail - as in the 3.0 Carrera or Weisach or later 93 RS-America type - not to be confused with the later (78-89?) turbo (tea tray) with squarish sides.

and yes, it is NLA

The early Carrera tail rubber is different than the Carrera tail rubber found on later cars . See pics below:

thanks Terry, I stand corrected.
I always thought they would at least bolt up, but I can see from the pics that the rubber on the later ones extend further towards the cab.

The profile is different at the side edges too - see the white car above, where the sides are chopped of flat, vs the early style where it's rounded.

Thanks guys,

Anyone know where I can get a good reproduction? Seems OEM is made of unobtanium these days....

I really like the sleeker design, and I guess the all fiberglass early tail would be lighter as well.

You might check with fellow Pelican "group911@aol.co" (note there's no m on the end). He handles stuff like this. He provided a new one with the tail I bought from him. Also, I think I saw an ad here in the last month for one or maybe even two - try a search in the classifieds.

PS - Ditto on this design, very well integrated, and I think it's the best original style. Definitely lighter than an OEM lid with a later Carrera wing added.

It's hard to find a nice one. I have one that need some stud work. I'm saving it for a rainy day project. I love the look of the tail. Just a little different and unique looking compared to the later Carrera tail IMO.
