Is this a repro hood crest?

I'd appreciate some expert feedback on this hood crest I picked up this weekend. I received it in return for helping to get a friend's 914 running, so if it's real that would be nice, but if not, oh well.
I tried to find shots of the back side of the Stoddard/Performance as well as the infamous cmartinperez repros, but I didn't see anything.

Here are the reasons I think it's a repro:
-back surface of badge is too 'pebbled'
-PORSCHE (and most other) indentations on rear are too distinct
-not as much excess solder as most early badges
-R is centered more over the 1 than the 0

Reasons I'm not so sure:
-it's at least 8-10 years old, and looks older (Lots of patina). How long have they been making reproductions?
-Wayne has said in a post that there were different manufacturers of early crests with perhaps slightly different molds, which could explain the finish on the rear.

Thanks,

No reproduction there. That is indeed one of the two early style badges.

The repros do not have soldered pins. There is one scumbag on EBay that sells "original" badges, NOS condition. He takes repro badges and adds solder around the base of the molded pins to make it appear to be soldered.

It's an early badge for sure.

A little off topic but does anyone restore the originals. Mine has a chip in the orange on my 71.

I like patina, but in this case would like to know who fixes these badges.

Michael, thanks for the help!

Dan, in my searches this morning I ran across a thread with some pictures from a guy who restores them. I'll see if I can go back and find it.

How much are we talking here for an restoration? Anybody know or is it on individual estimate basis? Just a ballpark.
My '72 hood crest needs it too.

Sorry for the hijack.......I'm still looking for a reasonably priced SILVER crest. Found one for $132 bucks but that's insane. If someone has one please shoot me a PM.

Thanks,

Scott

It's an early badge for sure.
So they didn't have a part number on them? How about the other of the two versions? I've looked for good threads about this a couple of times and never really came up with good pictures of authentic versus repop. If you've got pictures to post that would be great. I'm always interested in this sort of little detail stuff.

Hi Matt,

No, the early badges did not have the part number. Since my interest is primarily in the cars up to 73, I'm not sure when exactly the part number showed up but, I'm fairly sure it was not on the orange bar badges.

As for pics, I don't have any handy since I'm on extended business travel. However, do a search for my posts as I've been involved in a couple of detailed threads about badges. You will find a lot of info and pics.

The picture of GTC's badge is exactly like the one I just removed
from my 1977 911s Targa. I very much suspect it was the original badge from how it was attached, the seal condition, and the know history of my car.

The replacement has the black and red showing through to the back of the new badge.
