Permatune vs Bosch CD

I just wondering that new PermaTune could be better than old Bosch CD. In PermaTune papers is mention that it should be 2.5 bigger spark. Maybe somebody made some tests Permatune vs Boch CD?

you may find that most prefer the MSD over the perma-dume. probably close between bosch and MSD.
in a stock car i doubt you can tell the difference. the only difference i could tell between the premadume and the MSD is that the car now runs with the MSD.

if you notice, most race cars use the MSD. cant say i have ever seen a permadume in one.

as far as voltage differences, not sure. i know the schematic for the bosch says 450v out to the coil, and if the coil is 100:1, then you are looking at 45kv, yes it hurts like you would not believe.

Lots of posts on this in the past. FWIW, and it should be worth a lot, Warren Hall felt the Bosch unit is the way to go. Rebuilt ones are available...I agree...MSD much better than permatune.

Someone gave me a 3-pin Permatune from a running 911.
I am trying to sell it cheap.
What is it worth?

Blue or silver permatune? I bought a 3-pin blue one off the classifieds here a year or so ago for much less than $200 - I think it was maybe $50 or $100?

Question

Pelican lists a new Silver box:

10-8540-600-M46 Perma-Tune CD System, 3-pin, 911 (1969-77) [Photo]

$463.00

The Silver 3-pin box I have came out of a '77 and I'll post it for $125.- shipping included.

Would that be fair?

I'll sell the car first

I'll sell my PORSCHE first before ever installing another PERMA JUNK in it.

See Pictures as to why it's called perma junk.

Think Twice before installing a Perm Junk in your Porsche. I was lucky the Perma Junk didn't fried the engine wiring harness.

I call them "Perma-Doom's",....

I consider the Bosch OEM CD units and MSD's far superior to the above item.

I had a Permatune installed in my car. From day one there was a stumble between 2600-2800 RPM. When the Permatune died I replaced it with an MSD unit. The car runs great and the stumble is now gone.

As far as I understand, the Permatune blue boxes are good, silver ones are bad. My blue one performed no differently than my stock Bosch CD box. The MSD though clearly outperforms both.

At least this one, you can see what failed. The later ones are potted in epoxy and are unrepairable.

If you want to repair this you can have it. I wouldn't put another Perma Junk in my car.

Ruf,

Thanks for the kind offer but it would only be put next to my dead Pema-junk.

A Permatune came with my 73.5 from the PO. I've read a lot here about the Silver vs the Blue box however, my Permatune (3 pin) box is black. Anyone have any information about this model? (BTW, I bought a used Bosch unit as a back up when the currently running Permatune bites the big one)

Ah, that explains it.
Your box is made in CA, the one I am selling is from Texas; far superior.

Another thing to consider for most people is that the MSD has some mounting/wiring issues and is really not that much cheaper than the Bosch. Given the Bosch is $367, and the PermaTune is $557, not sure why anyone would go with the PermaTune. If you arent racing it, Id think the Bosch is the way to go...

True as long as you have the Dead Bosch Box to return. Otherwise, you need to add $250 to the $367 cost (for a total cost of $617). Still a good deal for the correct factory box.

my MSD was about $230. i dont think the extra money for a bosch is worth it, but i also would not take out a good bosch just to put in the MSD. if your msd goes bad, you can get one at any advance, thats nice if you are on a trip.
i mounted mine right above the relay panel. i had to move one relay, no big deal.
i think Ronin has pics of his, his looks real good, but i dont think his is CIS and may have a little more room.
