what have I got here? SWB, Bosch CDI unit?

Well, my own little barn find delivers a new surprise every day!

`1967 911 Normale - when I'm pulling off the crappy sound pad - loe and behold - an electrical gizmo. Bosch 0227 200 001.

I think it is a CDI unit, yes?

naturally, there is spare wire coming out of it, nothing running to it, wrapped up in elec tape.

so, that sorta throws my 67 era elec diagrams out the window for the ignition system, right? any ideas what goes to what at this point, or how to start figuring out what I have got here?

does this mean that normal parts for this 67's ignition system are now different since this 'game changing' discovery?

Yes, that is a CDI. I don't know if it belongs in your car but I suspect it doesn't. Someone more knowledgeable about early cars will chime in shortly.

There are only 3 wires going to the CDI unit, 2 white wires and 1 red one.
1. One white wire goes to the + coil (or transformer) terminal
2. The other white wire goes to the distributor points and the tach
3. The red wire is +12 volts switched through the ignition switch on the dashboard.
If the previous owner has updated the ignition system with a CD box, the points are only used to trigger the CD box - a much improved setup over the stock ignition - but not stock if that is what you are going for.

the wiring back there appears to be a bit of a mess....but it also seems to all work - or it did last time it ran.

the wire coming out of one of the 3 pins that goes nowhere - walter - is a swithed 12v lead for some accessory? [maybe the fuel pump - if the engine stops the fuel pump stops???] there does not appear to be a 'mate' looking for a home back there - just this flying loose wire that had elec tape wrapped around it!

here is the rest of the story in terms of voltage regulator, 'updated' fuel pump, etc. I"m sure it made sense to whoever did it, but following these wires with the random color changing flying splices is a trip!! and, just to make things fun, the requisite overspray from the last crappy paintjob!!

thanks you guys - appreciate the help - I'm going to change out the voltage regulator now to a newer unit - right for the car. Think I'll have any issues if the regulators are different? I'm not sure what he's got in there, but there is a size difference and I cannot get to the numbers on the old unit.

oh - and to address Walter's point about 'stock' - I am less interested in restoration stock as I am in functional stock....we are not going to be showing this baby, but I'd like to keep as period correct as practical. steelies, for instance. but I do like the corbeau seats I put in - much improved for my back support needs.

This car is a stock 911 - normale - no letter designation in 67 other than S or blank. however, I have ventilated discs....surprise! so maybe some other S parts are lurking around as well?

car purchsed new in SoCal for $5600 by first owner, and sold in 71 for the same amount, I purchased from second owner for same amount again! The car has only ever sold for $5600!
