993..Which variant ?
OK, so I've made up my mind that I'll purchase a 993 over 996 as my everyday ride, however I'm now hearing the only version to go for is the Varioram model preferably in a manual. As the prices of the Varioram variants here in Australia are insane will the Non-varioram models in Tip T produce similar performance or is there a massive difference between the 2? Also are there any inherent problems with 993 in general or are relatvely bullet proof?

I would have to respectfully dissagree. I would buy a 95 Obd1 non varioram car just for the tunability and SAI issues. That said, they both are great cars! Good choice. I miss mine badly!

The pre 1996 993s (non Varioram) are not bad at all. But I would not go for a tiptronic version.
The 1995 non vario manual transmission is even better than the later vario 993s due to the short gear ratio. |
Shahram, why wouldnt you choose tip ?

Because the 6 speed is much more fun unless you have a good reason for an auto. I do know that there are people that swear by the Tips though.

significantly slower, higher gas consumption and less value if you ever try to sell the car.

also in Aus all '94, 95, 96 993 manual trans will have the favorably geared g50/21 6 speed trans. for '97 & 98 all models ww have the taller geared g50/20 so the difference is '94 & '95 non vram vs '96 up vram. I would drive as mant as you can and from your own opinion but mine is either will do nicely, just find the car tha is in best shape and pushes your buttons. I never saw the point of a tip 911/964/993 but if that's what you want drive one, see what they're all about. |
One thing you'll need to check on is the recall on the '95 wiring harness. The replacement is free but you'll want to make sure it's done since I believe it's a fire hazard. Not sure if this is a US only issue or not. BTW, I have a good friend in LA who had (got stolen) a '95 tip and the car was anything but slow. He'd had a 930 cab previously so he knew what a fast "911" is. He's moved on to a 996 now though...again with a tip...traffic in LA is a PITA. Of course it's pretty crappy here in Dallas.
