Porsche Crest Mirror backdating

Anyone know if it's a direct swap to go from the 72-up style chrome rectangular outside rearview mirror (pictured on the white 74 Carrera) to the earlier pre-72 style round mirror (pictured on the orange 69 912)?

I ask because I'd like to backdate my 72 with an earlier mirror but don't want to get into drilling holes and doing bodywork to fill existing ones.

Yes, it's a direct swap. You're looking to install the large, round Druant mirrors and the hole spacing is the same. BTW, if you want to install a passenger side mirror also, you may wish to have a glass shop put in a convex mirror, however, the standard glass will work. Be sure to place the passenger side mirror correctly--not in the dog leg like the driver's mirror--it needs to be moved back and a bit higher to be seen through the vent window. Just a precaution before you drill.

Thanks for the info! I'm just looking to replace the existing driver's side mirror with one I had as a spare when I had the orange 912.
