sounds like pebbles in muffler

My car is making terrible sounds like there are pebbles in my muffler....

Advise please...

Scared that there is motor damage...

If I turn in tight circles it stops, then when I go straight again it starts, when I turn the motor off they continue to bounce around for a few seconds then stop.

Muffler or cat? If cat, the honeycomb inside may have failed. Muffler, don't know.

If the motor is stopped and no exhaust is being forced through, then it may not be loose objects flying around in the exhaust stream. Possibly broken bits of baffel (or a whole baffel itself) that has dislodged and rattles through vibration and heat expansion. Turning may cause the baffel to wedge itself and stablize for a while. With the motor off, cooling of different metal pieces may cause the sound. It you're sure it's from the muffler, then motor damage risk is small--unless a blockage occurs. Best to get it looked at.

Check out this thread: Loud Exhaust but only when Hot after highway run – Has me Baffled

I had a similar problem but it was worse when hot. Is the sound there all the time or is it related to how hot? I have not driven mine a lot since I tightened the air injection plugs and am thinking about replacing the muffler. The other thing it to do a good visual inspection of all the pipes. Can you record the sound and attach it?

you can always pull the muffler off and shake it, and if it rattles i bet the baffle is toast.

Rocks in your muffler.

My 85 911 coupe had a similar sound. Though I'd describe mine as ball bearing bouncing in a coffee can.

The baffles were shot inside the muffler. I just replaced it myself. it only took 15 minutes.
