Alternator not charging after replacement
I replaced the alternator in my 89 3.2 Carrera after the warning light came on at idle, going out at full throttle and testing a no charge condition at the battery.
Now after going through this fun (!) job of taking everything apart and installing a rebuilt unit from Pelican, I started the car and the same condition exists! Warning light on (at any engine speed). Tested no charge at battery! All cable connections looked fine. No obvious broken wires at alternator. The regulator is part of the alternator, so???? What am I forgetting as a possible cause? At least the cleaned up fan assembly looks great! Any advice would be appreciated! Mike |
I could be wrong (usually am), but isn't there a separate rectifier/circuit outside of the unit? I believe the regulator is internal, but I remember reading somewhere there was another "gizmo" in the circuit...?

A bump for you. I'm curious as to the (correct) answer, also.

Thanks...I'm surprised no one has chimed in, so thanks!
Does anyone have a reference for a wiring diagram for an 89 3.2? I noticed that the diagrams on line here only go to a certain year. Mike |
check the 14 pin connector on the engine relay board for any corrosion. big red to B+, brown grounds to D-, blue to D+/61. pretty simple. if that's what you have, get another unit.

Are you sure you hooked it up correctly? When I installed my repaired alt, I connected the wires to the wrong connector post. I drove the car to work the next day. No problem in the morning but didn't have enought juice to get back home. The car conked out at about 8-9 volts; watched the voltmeter go down from 13V or so. Had to wait 2 hours for AAA tow to show up.
I've had the car towed a couple of times over the years; love their expression when I tell them to take it back to my place instead of a shop. jt -84 targa |
diode at alternator light
i think the diode is at the alternator light...

Returning a new rebuilt alt is not unusual. Starters a little less likely. I take it as just part of the job.

Bring the alternator into Pep Girls or the Manual Zone, and have them test it. Could be a bad rebuild.
|
Make certain you attached the ground strap to case,it will not charge without it!
|
John nailed it. If everything checks out get rid of that alternator and get a NEW BOSCH unit.
There's been a bad run of rebuilt alternators surfacing lately... (this has nothing to do with the vendor and everything to do with the supplier) |
I have had 2 bad alts in the last 6 months, both from diff. vendors, both reman Bosch units.
