HELP! My Tie Rod is fallen and it can't get up!
Well, not quite....but....does anyone out here in NJ have the "special tool" to remove the tie rod end? I think it's VW 267. I have tried the fork, and I just can't get the damn thing apart. So now I have a very unhappy looking P-Car out front. Anyone?!?!?!? ------------------ Josh Black on Black '84 Carrera |

Hi Josh
I am in NJ but I don't have the "special" tool. I removed my rack & pinion and in the process used a gear puller to remove the tie rod ends from the uprights. I also had to use an impact gun to turn the center stud on the gear puller. The gear puller worked well and when the tie rod end popped out of the tapered hole it came out with some velocity so be careful. I would have tried the "pickle fork" but we did'nt have one that narrow. Incidently I stripped the threads on one tie rod end due to an incorrect torque in the factory manual and had to replace one of the tie rod ends. It turns out Pep boys has them in stock! |

tie rod ends have been popped out since the beginning of time by wacking the round end of the arm it goes thru, sharply and hard, with a BFH.

OK. Got the tie rod end off with ALOT of force. But of course, now I can;t get the inner off. I was not meant to do this. I have all proper tools but not enough leverage. I also noticed that the large washer type lock bolt is bent a little. I guess it's a good thing I'm doing this now! Even if I can't feel a big difference, it'll be a nice update.
THanks for your help! ------------------ Josh Black on Black '84 Carrera |
