strut brace for targa

Hey everyone. If you own a targa and have installed one of the many available strut braces, which one did you choose? was it easily installed? and did it perform up to your expectations? Thanks, Harry

I have a Rennline 3 pts + the Targa braces on the seat belts. Car is very stiff, I also have Bilstein 4 corners - Turbo tie rod and a set of Pirelli 17''.

It's definitly a ++++ to have the braces in the trunk and on the Targa bar.

I installed a schnell strut brace. Fit was horrible! Took some work to get it to fit, but now installed it is definately a great investment for the track and noticeably better when cornering. Next will be a new sway bar.

Strut Brace

Aluminum stable energies triangulated strut brace in my 72. You can feel the difference in turns. Bought at Hershey and got a nice price. Very simple to install.

Who makes a quality harness bar for a 72 Targa? All I've found so far are 74-up bars for targas and all-year versions for coupes. Are the longhood Targas that much different than the impact bumper cars?

Speedware Motorsports can makes you a nice harness bar. IIRC, cost is ~$350 for silver or black, or extra for powdercoading in other colors. Short of mounting the harnesses to a roll bar, I think this is the best option for targa owners, early or late, since the B-K bars are "guide" bars and are not meant for anchoring.

In regards to the original question, I have a B-K 2-point carbon strut brace and also the targa body brace.
The strut brace made little to no difference. I think a 3-point strut brace would work better, but I didn't want to lose the trunk space and the ability to store the targa top up front.
The body brace made a bit more of a difference, but the car is still a very flexy flyer.
I think that weld-in panels such as those common for 914s would be be a worthy project, but I'm not sure if anyone makes them.

The Speedware bar is similar in design to the Brey Krause bar. The only discernable differences are the size and material. Speedware uses a larger diameter steel cross bar than the stainless steel B-K unit.

Hi,

I have a Stable Energies Harness Bar in my '73 Targa (http://www.stableenergies.com/prodinfo.asp?number=GB1). It is easy to fit and works well with my Schroth ASM 4 point belts. It takes me about 5 minutes to install or remove it. It also allows me to use my stock 3 point belts on the street.

Bear in mind you need to be careful since harnesses are not compatible with many of the Porsche seats.

Here is a shot of mine:

This install is not legal for DE due to the high back seats which interefere with the routing of the shoulder straps.

Hi Harry,

I have a Weltmeister installed in my car. I think it helps a bit in Autocross but for ordinary street dring, I do not see a difference.

I should note that I modified the Weltmeister (see this thread for the mod: Weltmeister Strut Bar upgrade project) mounts to allow my Strut tops to move freely. I did not triangulate mine.

I bought mine from 911 chips (Steve Wong) I'm very satisfied with the fit and quality.
