Ok, remember those "side" projects I was talking about doing while my car is torn down?
Well, I'd like to tackle one of them this weekend if I may. A while back I bought a burlwood dash kit for my car. Instead of the normal "thin adhesive backed" kit I was expecting,...I got what appears to be replacement parts all together. I am talking about the 4 pc. foam/vinyl pieces that surround the A/C controls and CD player etc. Well since I was expecting a set of stick-on venere pieces I figured I'd just cover up my old warped pieces...but what I have dosen't cover the original pieces up... they flat out replace them. So now my question is, "A", how do the original pieces attach to the underlying metal frame, and, "B", How should I attach the wooden pieces in their place? I know the glove box section was originally just glued on, and a friend at work suggested going to a auto body shop and getting some of that 3M double sided tape (stuff that holds modern car badging in place on newer cars) and use that to hold the wood to the glove box. But the other three pieces I am not sure how they are attached to the metal dash undernieth. I don't want to have to drill holes in the back of these pieces...way too nice for that. Any ideas??????? |

Early cars had a kind of double sided tape holding that stuff on. Later ones were just glued on. Try and match whatever you find. You'll have to pry that stuff off. Be careful! A sharp plastic chisel or knife would work well. You need to remove the knee bolsters if I remember correctly.

Thanks Tyson, that's exactly what I was after.
I don't like the idea of glueing the wood pieces to metal. I think I can get a hold of some of that 3M stuff and make it work. Appreciate it! Lee |
