Thumbs down Grinding sound in the steering.

I only hear sound, almost like a creaky hinge, when the car is almost at a full stop; or lurching forward, It does not appear to be brake related. Seems to be coming from teh left of the steering column. However steering is tight and firm. Even after a solid DEW,(skid pad, figure 8s, thresholde braking, etc.)
Any clues would be appreciated.

Ball joints do that.

Ball joints? What is the next step? How complicated? Is the adjustment or replacment time?

There are several things that can make a front end squeek. Ball joints are a common culprit. To replace them (I have a 70 model, but they are much the same), You must remove wheels, and detach the bottom of your strut from the control arm (On my model, the ball joint includes a thick pin sticking from the top which slides into a hole & clamp on the bottom of the strut). You must remove the washer and nut from the bottom of the ball joint and pry the ball joint off. Install in reverse. not really a hard job unless you have trouble getting the joint itself off. Your local wheel & alignment place could probibly do it pretty quickly for you. I'd buy the parts. The 68 model joints cost a lot. Later ones aren't so expensive. Good luck!
