Heater control between seats. Do I need it?

Newbie question but I have to ask.

My '78 non-A/C car has the "Automatic Heating" control box between the seats. I didn't get much seat time in the car before I took it off the road and started ripping it to pieces but I do know that the controls on this box had no effect on the HVAC output so it is likely broken!

-How is the system supposed to operate?

-Does this box control a heating fan somewhere in the car? Does the rotary knob that goes from blue to white and then to red just control how much heat enters the car through the rear engine bay control boxes?

-Is it possible to remove this ugly box completely and end up with the same type of manual heating that all 911s without the Automatic Heating have?

-Why does my car only have one red levelr while many cars have two (one on each side of the E-brake lever)?

Thanks :)

Well, The lever there opens and closes the manual heater flap and if operating, the engine compartment heater blower. With the Lever up it then allows you to operate the dial there to control the foot blowers rate of speed. If you plan to delete the heat, I see no reason you can't remove the housing and tuck the wires. You will have exposed E-Brake lever and maybe a hole in the carpet area.

I deleted my heat and removed that ugly box. I have a leather sleeve over the e-brake and levers. Can't find a pick, will post one later if no one else does.

You can replace it with manual levers.

I should have included more info in my original post.

I need to keep "heat" in my car but perhaps I can do without this fancy box? I didn't even know that my car had "foot blowers"

This sounds like an appealing option. Can someone please share the details?

Here's mine with the heater box delete.

You don't have footwell blowers. They were standard starting in 84.

My bad, but why is there a dial, does it control the ehgine compartment motor?

My guess (it's been a while since mine worked): The dial controls the fan in the back, it's a three speed + defrost.

my dial doesnt work worth a darn either. Not sure if I will ever get around to fixing it as I dont drive my 82 when it is below 50 degrees anyways. Even then if it is a sunny day then the inside stays fairly warm.

I like the 2 lever modification though. Is there a link here how to do that?

DRACO A5OG 11-13-2008 09:30 PM

Did not know the engine compartment fan was variable speed. Thanks for the edification!

slodave 11-13-2008 09:41 PM

OK, I don't know. One thread I read (deals with 84+) says that the console dial is for the footwell blowers.

Next in line...

This looks like a nice simple set up. Can anyone tell me how to get from the pic that I posted to the pic below? My car will be driven often in temps as low as 20F so the heat needs to work!

What parts will I need to buy for the conversion?
What heater function(s) will I lose by going this route?

That's teh stock manual lever setup I mentioned above except somebody has an aftermarket leather boot. The stock ones are bubber.
You just need the manual e-brake/ heater lever setup.

slodave 11-14-2008 09:15 PM

^^I had a hard time sourcing the correct rubber boot. :) I like the leather. Heck, it's a '84, it's supposed to have the ugly plastic box.

Ringmaster, can't help on the heat conversion.

Generally the 2 levers operate R and L heat control flaps on the heat exchangers. When all the blowers came into being, I guess controlling the flaps separately became a moot point. Check to see that the lever in your car is working to open both flaps and you can leave it as is. However (and since I haven't looked under that box yet) the single lever may be attached to the box you want to remove. The older dual levers are attached at the brake handle. It's possible you will have to get an older style brake handle and levers to make your car like Dave's

Sorry I can't be sure.

you will likely need to download the PET and pore over the parts diagrams

I don't follow. Yes, the left lever controls the left flapper box and the right, the right FB. I have a 1984 - the first year for foot well blowers, as well as the blower at the engine. Ringmaster has a 1978. How can my setup predate his?

I'm pretty sure that the lever is connected to the brake lever on his as well.

My red manual lever is connected to the E-brake assembly.
