Removing Starter on '87 Carrera

My starter needs replacing, and looking at the Bentley manual, it says if pre-'87 you don't have to do anything special, but if '87-'89 you have to remove a bunch of stuff and drop trannie six inches. The "100 Projects" book doesn't distinguish between the two, and just says remove bolts and pull it out (after removing wires of course). Which is right? Thanks,

You most lower it Don. It's not too difficult.

Do a search for some different ideas on how to get to that top allen nut but I think in any case the engine has to be lowered. With the G-50 you can't get to it easily from the driver side cause of the clutch slave cylinder. If I had to do it again I might try removing the slave. Just an idea. I did mine with the engine out. I'd disconnect the battery first too. Ken

I became an expert on this process last summer with my 915 car - my starter kept breaking and I kept having to pull it.

1. jack up car
2. get appropriate tools
3. disconnect wires
4. hug tranny with right arm
5. complete hug with left arm
6. use right arm fingers to place allen into socket
7. use left arm to torque

I'm pretty sure you don't have to lower it on a G50 car. I did lower it on my old G50 car, but I hadn't perfected my technique at that time.

Good luck!

We did it without lowering a few months back.

My mechanic friend took a long look at it and decided to remove the slave cylinder which gives you all the access of the earlier cars.

All went very well after that until we had to re fit the slave which was a PITA but we eventually got there and the clutch was overdue for a change of fluid and bleed anyway.
