Well I live on Long Island, NY and it is starting to get pretty cold out here. From the looks of it I'm guessing i should go with 20W50 and stick with my move on regular oil? I wanna try and be as safe as I can with my motor.

Yes, a multi-weight is better for you - unless you want to change oil twice a year :)

Alright thank you.

Ya thats another dumb question i wanted to ask but I know the normal cars you change your oil every 3-4k miles. How often does it have to be done on a air-cooled Porsche?

We all have our own schedules. When my 911 leaked, I would not worry so much, as I was always putting fresh oil in.

I made a lazy mistake and did not replace my oil filter last August (2007), when I replaced oil, so that had about 5K on it and I believe about 2500 miles since last oil change. I guessing I drove about 5k miles in the last two years, maybe 6K.

Nothing noteworthy to report in the oil when it drained today. In fact, I never notice anything at the magnetic plug, other than half a pinky nail of very, very fine metallic 'dust'. I probably will not change the oil for another year or 3000 miles. Again, over 230,000 miles on the engine.

My Toyota goes 5-6k miles between oil changes.

Oil changes are cheap protection for our expensive motors imo, and since oil is hygroscopic, my schedule is every 3K miles or every year, whichever comes first.

3k is highly prudent -- maybe overkill but the highest priced oil is much cheaper than an engine rebuild

never let oil sit in the car past 1 year - even if it only has 20 miles on it (in fact ESPECIALLY if it has only low miles on it)

I change mine every fall - if I go over 5k miles/year I change it then.

For maximum motor and other component life, never drive the car LESS than 20 minutes -- unless you just stop briefly 915 minutes) and then drive off again.

Best thing is to get the engine warmed up and keep it that way, Worst is to do stop and go driving such as 5 miles to work and back. If a commute is 5 miles, a bicycle will be smart...
