Question Shock absorbers/dampers how do I tell which type I've got?

I know that the Carrera 3.2s came with both Boge, Bilstein and Koni, but I'm not sure what's on my stock euro 1984. How can I find out? I need to know because I'm going to buy new shocks/dampers soon.

Mikkel,

Get under the back of the car and see what color the rear shocks are. May have to clean them to be positive. Yours should be black which means Boge. Green or yellow means Bilstein and orange means Koni.

Take one of the front wheels off and clean the strut just above where the axle mounts. Should find a name and numbers.

If you find that it says "Boge" and 911 xxx xxx on the front strut then you have the Boge setup. A green strut means that you have Bilstein struts.

The rears will take any flavour of shock, while the fronts, when they have the Bilstein strut assy, MUST have the Bilstein shock. The Boge front strut assy can accept Boge, Bilstein, Koni, et al shock cartridges IF YOU SPECIFY that they are for a BOGE strut.

I know you are overseas, but there is a set of front Bilstein Sport shock cartridges that I believe fit a Boge housing on Ebay right now. I just installed Bilstein HD on front, and Sport on the back of my 85 and am very happy with the results. Put a set of turbo tie rods on at the same time and you will really notice a difference.

Good luck,

JA

Well I know they're black, or at least the housing is. So I guess I have the Boge setup as expected. Can there be more than one Boge type or is it always the same type?

I'm quite interested in getting Koni's because I can get those cheap through my place of work. Only I'm in doubt if there's more than one type of Koni suited for Boge struts. I don't want to order the wrong kind and then later finding out they won't fit the car.

Mikkel,

Pls clean off one of the front struts as I detailed in the earler email and email me the number. I will tell you what type you have in the front, but from what you have told me so far it sure sounds like you can look for a set of Koni/Bilstein for Boge struts!
