Getty Design R-type amber engine shroud
 

I was asked on a recent thread about the Getty Design engine shroud if I would post a picture after I finished assembly of the shroud so here goes.

Fitting this shroud was a lot more work than I would have imagined. The fit was not anywhere near the quality factory ones. It had to be really coaxed into place. It took me at least 12-hours to fit it. Measure, mark, cut grind, drill, test fit, mark, cut grind, drill, test fit, mark, cut grind, drill, test fit.

I must mounted and unmounted it at least 20 times.

The shroud comes in seperate pieces and has to be drilled and riveted together. It is rough cut so some additional trimming is necessary. All the holes for mounting need to be drilled.

Anyway the shroud looks pretty darn good though once it's finished.

The motor is a completely rebuilt 2.7RS replica motor but with carbs instead of MFI. More on it here.

Thank you for validating what we tell out clients that consider aftermarket shrouds. It takes a ton of time to get it right! The more popular the maker for the part usually means the more time it takes to install.
Why? the same molds are used again and again. Each time a part is to be removed from the mold, the edges are ground back to separate the parts. Even the best molds out there get deformed over time , even in small ways.
The glib response would be " Well. they should make new molds off virgin masters then !" Sure and then the parts would cost 3-4 times more than they do now as they amortize the expense per part

Bobby hit the nail on the head. Everything fiberglass takes lots of time to fit properly. I was going to install an amber shroud on my recent 3.2SS build. Then I decided that I didn't want to take the time and refinished the factory shroud. Eventually I will go back and add one - or maybe not.

I would like to get a new shroud but I deffinately do not want to go through that. What do you suggest?

Also, would a 1970 shroud fit on a later 3+ liter motor? I have been working on making the engine bay look a little more period correct.

has anyone installed the Series900 amber shroud? his door reproductions were excellent.

Bought a c/f shroud from Autobahn Extremist for $600, as I remember. Took me about 15 minutes to install after I got the carburetors off.

Max Crawford sells a very accurate R / 906/ RSR engine shroud "kit" in oe style german glass for $1500..... and then you get to source the floating nutsert plates, drill all the holes and do final fit. The parts will not work on a regular engine; you have to use the small diameter fan ring, no engine mount oil cooler as that is the way the race engines were.

$600 is a deal if its a drop on to a stock engine !

i bought the rennspeed one and it was too green colored to me so i eventually ebay'd it. i then found a guy in indiana who previously made them for gt racing. the guy was a pain to deal with and it took forever to get the parts. it was reasonably priced at about $400 for the shroud and all the tin but the parts were trimmed poorly and the tin was a little warped. i'll most likely use used factory parts in the future. does anyone remember a supplier who mostly made 914 fiberglass that had a shroud that had the block-offs and extra cooling tunnels all as one part?

I've heard very good things about Damon's shrouds but I know he only does a run once in a while. I think his main business is restoration, welding and collision repair. So he only does a run of fiberglass parts when time is willing.

I still have my original black shroud, that is not so black anymore. Can it be refinished/painted? If so, with what, specifically?

FYI, I didn't realize there was as much of a method to the shroud color madness, but Panorama did a decent job of putting together a shroud color chart in this month's issue.

this is very impressive work, NICE! the attention to detail is what this hobby is all about.

Those are the ONLY ones I will use any longer.

After fooling around for years with ones with fitment that ranges from abysmal to marginal and have the wrong color, its not worth it to me to use anything else.

We buy a lot of these from him for a variety of engines and customer projects.

I have one of Damon's amber fan shrouds on my engine - only required very minor tweeking for a perfect fit ...

Where can you find one of "Damon's amber fan shrouds?" Cost?

Since we're on the topic.. does anyone have any experience with the various amber/fiberglass sheet metal tin replacements. Any better than others?

Due to the difficulty described here that's involved with cutting these shrouds to make them fit, I wound up cutting two or three of my six intake holes a little big. Is this going to cause cooling problems? Mine is not a Getty, but did require lots of cutting.

I totally agree with Damon's fan shrouds being the best in town.

No offense to the originator of this thread, but his shroud does not look very "amber" to me.
It's more of a washed out off grey.
Perhaps it's just the camera?

Here is my Series 900 amber fan shroud that I put on my 2.7 RS MFI engine.
Now that's what I call amber!
As far as I know, very little if any work was required to get it to fit.
It looks great IMHO.

All shrouds exit the mold needing edge trimming.

If an amber shroud appeared on your recent rebuild, someone spent time for a proper fit. Add a few hours onto the rebuild schedule.

I'm a little less worried, your intake gaps look similar to mine. I suppose once my carbs are back on it'll be sealed up a little better.

The camera angle and shroud height above the intake flange makes the openings appear larger than the gasket. If possible, I suggest minimal air gap to reduce potential airflow loss in this area. Some U-shaped rubber molding around the inside of the opening can help.

I know this is an old thread but are Series 900 shrouds still the one to get? I’m in the market and have called and emailed Series 900 but haven’t gotten a response. Wondering if they’re still producing them?
