Sounds like your fuel pump is sucking air. I ran out of gas not to long ago,
and heard a noise that I had never heard before, just before running out.
I got out and checked it and it seemed to be the fuel pump.
You might have a fuel leak, that is causing air to get to the pump.
Good luck.

The sound is not the fuel pump. The fuel pump is located in the front of the car. If the engine is not turning over, your battery is dead..

thanks for the info guys. Does anyone know what the loud noise is in the rear though? its on the left side of the engine on the wall- I think the sound is coming from. And what I ment to say is that I smelled gas in the engine bay.

if you have gas leak, and the engine is not running anymore => you can't check for leak. Is it posible it leaked too much and you have no more gas now?
If you can manage for the engine to run again, check carefully on gas hoses behind the intake and air box, near and along the firewall, around all the gas hoses. I actually sticked my hands back there to feel for wetness while the engine is running. Becareful on the fan and belts.

A click, click, click, click noise would be the starter solenoid trying to engage. I am assuming that you didn't way over rev the engine. You may have two problems, lack of fuel and dead battery from trying to start the car up.

Find out if you have a fuel leak, as they can be fire hazards. Then you can charge the battery or jump start. We do not want to look at pictures of a burnt out shell.

you could have a rocker shaft that has come out or something to do with the valve train has come lose or broken. pull the valvle covers on the left side and check. start with the intake, you dont have to drain the oil to do that one.

if it is the exhaust, you could have hydro lock.
