door lock tumbler spins

88 911 accepts key, locks and unlocks ok, but the normal stop when you lock and unlock is gone allowing the key to spin 360 degrees in either direction. When I look at a picture of a 914 lock there seems to be a spring with two arms sticking out of it. Are there, and if it broke could this be causing this.? Can leave it alone, but am concerned about spinning the elec connection causing a failure of the key mech.
Thanks Glenn

I think 88 used electrics in the handle to unlock the door and the manual portion is only for when the battery dies. The actuator lever has probably come off the back.

Everything works fine inside and out. Its just that the tumbler can spin with using the key. The normal stops when turning the key to open and close are gone. Key still will open and close the door. Anyone know what gives the key in lock a stop after opening and locking the door?

Try disconnecting the batterey and unlocking the drivers door. Make sure the window is down.

Its a pretty easy fix. You have to pull the inside door panel off - there are quite a few things to undo but its easy enough. Once you have access to the inside of the door you undo the handle with approriate socket and 1/4 inch ratchet. Pop the door handle off and then you can see and have access to the lock, tumbler etc. The screw that goes into the inner end of the tumbler will be lose and may have come right out. If it came right out then there may be "bits" to be fished out of the bottom of the door. If you have to reassemble rather than just tighten the screw then its not too hard to work out how it goes together but if stuck, I am sure someone can find a photo for you.

No problem with the door panel. From what I've read, there will be a wire/clip attached to the door handle. After loosening nuts. Do I pull the handle out until I see the clip and then disconnect it to work on the handle or can the screw and replacement of parts be done with the electrical connection on. A picture would be great to let me know I have the right parts in place and what the parts are. Thanks again, Glenn

Did you try it with the battery disconnected? Sorry I don't have a picture but I would try it without disconnecting the wire first. If I remember right, the connector wraps around behind teh window channel and is secured with a stick black substance.
If the lever has been loose for a while, it may have fallen off completely.

From memory you do not need to disconnect the microswitch (you call it a clip).
