bad oil leak..HELP !!

I have a 78SC 3.0 single in single out stock exhaust. I have developed an oil leak somewhere on the rear of the engine. the oil drips down onto the exhaust where the motor and trans join and burns off making alot of smoke. My first though is main seal but I thought I had better ask some questions before I do anything. is there anything on the top side of the motor that could leak and cause this or am I looking at a rear main seal? The car is stored in my heated garage for winter so time is not an issue. I doesnt get driven unless its a nice day and that means next summer for me. ( West Virginia )
Thanks for any help
Keith

The most common back there would be the gasket for the oil breather tube and the sender for the oil pressure idiot light. Also a possibility are the three little seals for the engine oil cooler. Most people do these as a matter of course whenever the engine is dropped. The first two can be addressed if you remove all the CIS stuff. Lot of work but do-able.

excellent so most likely the rear seal is NOT my problem. is there any way I can see the seals you mention without dropping the engine or removing the CIS? I dont mind doing either as long as its required.
Thanks for the help

It might be your main seal....?? You never know. The two seals mentioned sit on top of the engine behind all the CIS stuff, get a telescoping mirror and a flashlight and see if you can see down behind your CIS. You might need to remove the rubber air boot at the top of your sensor plate assembly for more room.

My engine developed a similar oil leak. It was the oil thermostat o-ring that shot craps. Below is a photo showing the location of the t-stat's mount area and the leakage. While "in there" new oil cooler seals installed and other items being checked as well.

Regards,
mlfox
