Shift knob Question 85' Carrera

Following the OEM manual to remove my shift knob I destroyed it as the top portion was not removable as stated.

Are they screw on type, glued on ~ what???

Any help greatly appreciated! :D

Thanks,

rgd-out

Ps. IMHO not enough smilies used on this forum.

An 85 shift knob is one piece.

It is held on to the shifter by the use of a crush sleeve and press fit.

Sounds like it is a operation to remove it, cut, file etc...

Any helpful suggestions. I am wanting to install a Momo before Mon/Tues track events.

Typically, people get something underneath the shift knob, like a large open ended or adjustable wrench, and then hammer it up.

You could wrap it with a rag or something to try to protect it. But they can be pretty tight and a lot of people seem to end up destroying them.

If yours is wrecked anyways, there are lots of ways to remove it, a large pair vice grips would have it cracked off in seconds, for instance.

Just pull on it like crazy, and try not to punch yourself in the face when it finally comes off the gear lever.
