back fire

My 1970 911T is backfiring while idling and on deceleration, I cleaned the carbs, new plugs, new wires, cap and rotor, any ideas?

Exhaust Leak.

When it is dark, start the engine and you should be able to identify the location of the exhuast leak by the flash of light during the backfire.

try to figure out if the pops are coming from the intake stacks or out the muffler exhausts...

I had this problem and tried the same remedies as you. I went on to fit a new K&N air filter which helped a bit, stripped my fuel tank and re lined it with the POR15 kit, which guarenteed clean fuel. What did you find when you cleaned your carbs, mine were full of grey silt, which can`t have helped matters.

Finally I found the carbs were loose on the manifolds, so I whipped them off, fitted new gaskets and tightened them down, drove it a bit let it cool off and tightened again. (I couldn`t find a torque setting for these nuts).

My car backfires no longer.

Regards, Mike.
