Fuel Filter Removal

http://www.sbtraveler.tv/porsche/fuel_filter.jpg

The Porsche 101 book says to "remove the large black blower hose to get better access to the fuel filter". From my photo there is a small black hose that is in my way but over all there is the large box for the turbo that is really blocking it.

If I can disconnect the smaller house I might have an easier time getting it out. What is that hose? is it for air/exhaust or is there fuel or oil in that hose that will start leaking if I disconnect it?

Also should I remove the big black box that is really blocking access with out much trouble. I am worried that I will unscrew things and oil will go every where.

Last thing. The book says to remove the Fuel filter and the Accumulator together to make it easier to work with. If I am not replacing the Accumulator should I still remove them both to make it easier to change the fuel filter?

Thanks!

-Lars

1) "Large black blower hose" You don't have one on your car, so skip that step.

2)Not sure what that small line is on your turbo - possibly fuel?

3)Big black box is your intercooler, no oil or fuel in there. remove if not too difficult, mechanics have to get it out of the way too.

4)You shouldn't need to remove the accumulator at the same time, What you do need are some flare-nut wrenches of the correct size to get that fuel filter off.

Lars, The "big black box" is the intercooler. By all means remove that and access will be greatly improved. Use clean rags to plug the gaping holes left in it's absence that are hungry for stray nuts and bolts while you're working on other things. Not sure what the large diameter hose is but it is certainly a vacuum line so disconnecting it will not cause any fuel or oil leaks. You can remove the filter independent of the console. Be prepared for some fuel leakage when removing the filter by having some rags poised to catch the inevitable spill.

When Wayne was writing his book, he was working with mostly a 911SC and not turbos too much. The "large black blower hose" was found on 1975 to 1983 cars without turbos. It is part of the heating system. I didn't know you were working on a turbo in your earlier post, try to state the car you're working at the time or put it in your signature.
Good luck and have fun...
