Another 'I test drove a 997' thread...
All:
I drove an '09 Carrera 4 yesterday. OMG!! I was expecting to feel distanced from the road, with no 'rawness', but I fell in love with the car instantly. Smooth delivery of power, amazing brakes, cornered like it was on rails, and yet quiet and well behaved enough for heavy traffic. The cabin was very well appointed and comfortable, and the whole package was outstanding. Pics of the offending beastie; http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1227474873.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1227474893.jpg The 'client advisor' mentioned several times that he is "highly motivated", but even at $88k it is out of my league for now. That said, the '05's have started to come down, so in a couple of years a <4 year old <50k mile car is a real possibility. I need to go try a 993 Carrera 4 and see how they compare! Cheers, Paul. |
88k hmmmm.....wonder what a 07 GT3 is worth they will start coming off lease soon....
|
I own a '07 Carrera S, and yes they do feel like a 911 and are amazingly solid and grippy.
|
Dave:
Is there much of a difference between the '05 and '09? Thanks, Paul. |

Even the 05's in this economy have held their value hard.... Porsche did well with the 997 and their recessionary prices proves it.... |
Looks like '05 non-s cars can be had in the high 40's.
Pretty good deal, IMHO. FWIW, my '89 was $50k new. That translates to $83,605.65 today, yet the above car could probably be had for under $70k today... Cheers, Paul. |
Very nice Paul, but dangerous ;)
..... on the pocket book that is! |

Just bought a 2005 with 27K miles $46K. Porsche lease return. Porsche Certified Warranty. Very happy with it !!!!! Mint Condition Only problem cant seem to find any Porsche 101 type book so I can work on it. Anything would help.....

To the original poster's point. Every time I read someone opining about how much better the older Porsches are than the newer ones I absolutely HAVE to assume that they've never driven one. Having driven just about all of the different 9 series cars and liking all of them I don't know how someone could turn up their nose at the new ones, especially the 997. I got in one and went OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!! Balls.

I own both and although the '86 is a barrel of fun, the 997 is an awesome machine indeed. |
Try out a 2001 996 Turbo for $45,000. You will be amazed at the amount of car you can get for that price. The '01 Turbo is just a tad bit slower than the 959 for about 1/7th the price!

Are you sure that's a 2009? I thought all the 997.2 models have the redesigned taillights.
|
I agree Wayne. I could probably even swap $$ wise my 964 3.3T for a 996TT, but I just can't seem to let this one go.

The new 997 is an awesome car - undoes some of the damage of the other slights Porsche has slung at the enthusiast world recently. A friend of the family has one and it's awesome. It's heavy but hides its weight well.
If the new engine design proves as promising as it seems - where will the 997s competence leave the 996s (and earlier 997s, I suppose) as the years go by...? As a good deal for some of us, I imagine. |
i dunno. i drove one of these all around for a while. found my 83 was a zillion times more fun for 1/10th the price. as a DD i wouldnt mind having one but for....fun...nahh
|
That car is an '08.
I owned an '07 and now own an '09. VERY different cars... The 997 was amazing. The 997.5 is heads n tails over the 997. Either car is so much more refined and viceral that the earlier varients (I own a handful of those too.) Early cars are fun - but the 997.2 borders on supercar engineering. It rides nasty when you want it to - and goes like a monster when you want it to... |
Update:
Sorry, my bad- it was an '08. As you can see from my sig, I got a silver 993 Carrera 4, which I prefer to the 997! Cheers, Paul. |
