What's a "Carrera S?" (Why the "S?")

According to the Red Book, in 75, there was an "S" and a "Carrera" in the United States. The 911 S Targa had a production of 1,517 and the 911 Carrera Targa had a production of 174. This is for the US only. The ROW numbers were larger and there was also a ROW base 911 (neither an S or a Carrera).

I'd have to agree, as far as I know, "Carrera S" for a U.S. '75 911 is a made up designation.

Anyways, I believe that black car pictured above was in a really cool, well know coffee-table style book from the '80s. I have it somewhere, but can't remember the title. It's a famous author, though, he takes great pictures and has a unique writing style. I remember the author was at a car show in LA in the 80s, and he signed my copy of the book.

On this car, I remember the great pictures, and the story. The author meets the owner, goes for a drive, etc. etc. Very vivid writing. As a teen, I read it 50 times. (Just can't remember the title or author's name!)

The book also had a similar chapter on a blue 914-6 owned by Sam Cabiglio, with the pictures being taken on the beach in Palos Verdes.

I'll try to find it and scan it.

I still have the book, but will have to wait until the weekend to get up into the attic and rummage for it.

I'm pretty sure that is the car from the book, though.

I think I have the book in question and it indeed has several photos of a black Carrera Targa that looks identical to the one above. I can try to scan and post tomorrow. The book is:

Porsche Sport 1974/75 by Joe Rusz

Ron

P.S. I'm hesitant to join in the great name controversy, but here's a quote from the book: "This year there are only two types of 911 available in the U.S. There's the S - the basic 911 - and the Carrera - the everything-plus-the-kitchen-sink Porsche."
There's no mention anywhere of "Carrera S"

R.

May be in that book, too, but that's not the one I'm thinking of.

(Agree that the pic of that manual obviously does not refer to a "Carrera S" model, but instead shows that it is the manual for (1) the 911S and (2) the 911 Carrera for that year).

Oops: I jumped the gun on the Rusz book. The Carrera featured is almost identical to the car in this thread but it's a coupe, not a Targa. My mistake.

Hey Pelicaners,

The manual, just like mine, a 1974 Carrera has a driver's Manual, it was printed for the 911 S AND the Carrera. Just look at the "slash" between the 911S/Carrera. For the US, this Carrera had the
911 S engine! So the manual was for the 011S as well as the Carrera!

Cheers,

T.G

Only took me a year, but I found the book.
