Paint removal from Fuchs
I was able to find a lot of threads on removal of paint from body panels. But, I need to remove paint from a set of Fuchs wheels that a previous owner painted. They were painted black, and are starting to flake off in spots. I don't want to use anything that will effect the finish underneath.
Any suggestions? |

Good ol' aircraft stripper is excellent.
Be sure to wear gloves and a face mask. Clean them thoroughly with soap and water when stripped before painting.

Thanks for the tip. I wasn't sure if the aircraft stripper would effect the wheel surface under the paint. I had been thinking something like citri-strip

That's really good quality paint. Try the citri-strip, who knows. I'm guessing you're going to need the good stuff with Methylene Chloride in it. It eats latex gloves really, really fast. You may want a tougher glove.

I've found there are two types of fuchs finish. One is easier to remove the paint from the surface (I believe this is NEWER wheels...the inside is not painted). Another is harder, even after applying aircraft stripper several times...I had to do some wet sanding to get some of the remaining paint off. It looked as if the black paint is anodized. The OLDER fuchs have the inside painted black.
Anyone else has seen these? Lastly, make sure to use self etching primer. It works really well on bare metal surface. |

I also cover the wheels with plastic trash bags after applying the aircraft stripper, then let the stripper work it's magic. A scotchbrite pad works to help remove the paint when it's ready. |

Anyone ever refinished their Fuchs spokes with anodizing instead of paint?

I believe the wheels are anodized underneath the paint, so theoretically you could leave the spokes alone and paint the background as long as you don't scratch the anodizing while removing the paint.
