Any advice on painting a carrera wing? I have an 87 cab in Cassis Red Metallic (L80D) and just bought the wing. Its been a long, long time since I've had any automotive painting work done. What should I be looking for in a shop for a job of this relatively small size? What do I need done--in terms of coats of paint and clear coat?
Should I do any prep on the wing myself before I bring it in? (My skills are pretty limited in that regard). Lastly, any thoughts on how much this should run? Thanks, David

The P&B BBS may well be DOA. I never look, but one monkey don't stop the show.
To answer the question, the amount of prep needed will determine the price more than anything else. Take it in well sanded (block or hard flex rubber pad) with few issues and they can spray sealer and paint within a couple hours. Figure shop time at 75/hr (areas defer in price) and you can detail it yourself. You say you have limited skills. Well, you can read up on this stuff all over the Net. One important thing you must do it you plan on doing any prep, remove all wax first. I don't care how you do it, but you must strip the existing paint before sanding or you will simply sand the existing wax down into the existing paint. Not a good thing. Sand it all you want just avoid bare metal if possible. If you're not comfortable with sanding, or plan on using your fingers on the flat areas, turn it in the the bodyshop as is. And double the price. |

I painted/clearcoated mine 6 or 7 years ago. The primer, paint and clear cost around $170.
Where I was working at the time had all the equipment. It took me about 40 hours, I learned alot, it turned out nice and I realized why I was quoted $500 to have a pro do it. Dave |

Good point. It should be done on or near the car. Just turning up or down the gun pressure a few pounds will change the color.

yes, if youre not bringing the car to match, take off the fuel door and bring it to them to match.
