Which struts do I have?
I had a look at my front end today and found that I have 2 different inserts, a Koni on the left and a Bilstein on the right. I need to order new inserts and don't know which struts I have. The pics I have are from my camera phone so I apologize for the poor resolution but I hope someone can help identify the struts.

that's not two different inserts. That's two different struts.
The orange/red one is a koni strut. The green one is a Bilstein strut. I get a matched set of bilstein struts and inserts to go with them. |
Man, that's a good call, but I can't pick up on any difference other than color. What else should I be seeing? I can't quite see the pinch bolt on the first pic.

The bottom strut has the Bilstein roll pin.
How does this happen to cars? At what point does someone think it's ok to use different struts? |
Based on some of the other hillbilly repairs the PO did this doesn't surprise me at all. So which strut do I keep, the Bilstein? I had planned on ordering some Bilstein Sports so I assume this is the logical one to keep. How hard is it to replace the strut assembly?

If you include a new ball joint, not a bad job at all.

What on earth is all that grunge at the bottom of the strut in the top pic? I hope you took the pic after driving through a mud puddle or you've got more problems than just mismatched struts!
Replacing the strut isn't a difficult job. Top nut in the trunk area, ball joint at the bottom held in with a double wedge bolt, and you'll have to remove the caliper, wheel hub, and tie rod end from the strut. If you need to remove the ball joint from the control arm, gawd help ya. :p |
I'm thinking brake fluid leak. It starts up high and it seems to be on the brake flex hose.
